Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida.

Originally populated by the indigenous TaĆ­no people, Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1493. It was contested by the French, Dutch, and British, but remained a Spanish possession for the next four centuries.

1. SEA Semester Undergraduate Study

The importance of understanding the ocean is more important now than it has ever been. SEA Semester helps students to achieve that understanding through studies in Nautical Sciences, Oceanography, and Maritime Studies.

The program is broken up into two components, with the first starting at our campus in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. During this six-week shore component, students prepare for their research cruise in the second part of the trip and design their research projects to be conducted at sea.

During the research cruise, students take on the roles of both the scientific team and the sailing crew on one of SEA’s research vessels. Students navigate the state-of-the-art vessel by the stars, analyze oceanographic samples, and visit foreign, less-traveled-to ports.

2. University of Massachusetts

This study abroad course is only offered in winter by our Department of Biology.

This course was created so that students can get hands-on as well as a classroom-based learning experience to ecology to the basics of Caribbean tropical ecology, evolution, and conservation biology.

3. OCC: Culture and Civilization

In this program, students will be immersed in the local culture and they will interact with the local people living there in order to better understand the local civilization.

Other hands-on experiences include field trips, workshops, and cultural activities.

Through these hands-on experiences, students will understand the local culture and study the major global and local socio-economic, historical, political, environmental, and intellectual developments that have contributed to shaping its civilization.

4. SUNY Geneseo: Environment and Sustainable Development

Our school offers a variety of study abroad programs for many students everywhere. Many of our programs are set up in order to let students immerse themselves in various countries’ cultures and economies.

It allows students to experience the world beyond their current university.

5. Civil Code and Law Enforcement

Hamline University gives its students a large amount of study abroad opportunities so that students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in various countries all over the world.

This particular program is for Law students who are interested in Puerto Rico laws and civil codes.

6. Political and Social Movements Course

Our school offers a variety of programs to students so that they can immerse themselves in various cultures around the world.

In this particular program, students can experience the political and racial climate of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

This is the perfect place to take this course because you are not only learning about these issues but you also get to be a part of them.

7. Study at Oswego State University

Our school offers a variety of exchanges with other schools so our students can immerse themselves in another culture and language while completing their school work.

8. NRCSA Spanish Program

Looking to master your Spanish language skills while visiting an amazingly beautiful country? The NRCSA Center at the local Spanish Language School in San Juan, Puerto Rico might be exactly what you are looking for!

Students have the exciting opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Spanish-speaking culture while exploring the beauty of Puerto Rico’s beaches and other attractions.

Regardless of language proficiency, all interested students aged 16 and up are welcome to attend. Program options are split between group classes or private tutor sessions, making it easy to choose the appropriate option.

All students are encouraged to stay with a local host family as a guest in their home, though their options can be arranged by the student.

1. Spanish and Puerto Rican Culture

Study Spanish language and Puerto Rican culture in San Juan. Low cost. Weekly – monthly sessions year-round. Open to all college students, high school, and adults worldwide.

Housing options available. The host family provides not only two meals a day but also another outlet for practicing Spanish and learning more about Puerto Rican culture.

Special excursions are available, including a walking tour of the Bacardi rum distillery, horseback riding, snorkeling, a Junque Rainforest visit, and a trip to a coffee plantation.

10. International and Integrated Studies

The International Studies Program in English and The Integrated Studies Program in Spanish provides students with a chance to enrich their education through greater cultural immersion.

For students who have reached at least the low advanced level, the Integrated Studies program provides the opportunity for students to enroll in all of the regular classes that are offered in both English and Spanish with Puerto Rican students.

Students will be able to choose from a full set of courses that cover a multitude of disciplines, such as humanities, health, business, and many others.

The Nursing Program in English provides students with the immersive and unique cultural experience of Puerto Rico while taking courses specifically designed for Nursing students at Universidad del Sagrado Corazon.
