Best Nigerian Cinema Movies

Not only has this movie scene been popular with locals, but many films have been acclaimed and praised by cinemas around the world.

Take a look at some of the most popular Nigerian films that have proven popular in cinemas and YouTube playlists around the world:

1. A Tribe Called Judah

A Tribe Called Judah is a 2023 Nigerian film directed by Funke Akindele and starring Akindele, Timini Egbuson, Jide Kene Achufusi, Uzee Usman, Tobi Makinde, Olumide Oworu, Genoveva Umeh, Nse Ikpe Etim, Juliana Olayode, Uzor Arukwe, Fathia Balogun, Yvonne Jegede, and many more.

The film opened in theaters around the country on December 15, 2023. Akindele has stated that the film is devoted to her late mother and is based in part on her life.

A Tribe Called Judah is the story of Jedidah Judah (played by Funke Akindele), a single mother with five boys from five different dads from five distinct tribes. The first two sons are responsible and do their utmost to help and support their mother.

Meanwhile, the last three are less useful: Pere (played by Timini Egbuson) is a chronic pickpocket, and Shina (played by Tobi Makinde).

Is a hoodlum and is out in the community, and Ejiro (played by Olumide Oworu) is naughty and only cares about his girlfriend, Testimony (played by Genoveva Umeh). Despite their poor behavior, Jedidah continues to help them and keep them out of danger.

2. Adire

Adire, the first entirely independent film created by FilmOne Studios, depicts a story of agency, discovered family, and the repercussions of self-righteousness and hypocrisy. It’s funnier than I imagined, stylish (in more ways than one), and fully avoids the “third act”

“Itis” appears to affect the great majority of Nollywood productions. I sat, unsure what to anticipate, and left rather impressed. I enjoy a pleasant surprise.

Adire, the vivacious titular girl played by an electrifying Kehinde Bankole (Super Story, Blood Sisters), starts as a dissatisfied seasoned prostitute.

Tired of being under the power of her pimp, Adire steals what she believes she is owed and leaves for a village in rural Ibadan, where she goes about reclaiming her liberty by beginning her lingerie business full-time.

Some of her designs may be found all over the pimp’s house. Good “show, don’t tell” here.

3. The Black Book

The Black Book, directed by Editi Effiong in his feature debut, is a criminal drama starring Richard Mofe-Damijo as a former military man seeking justice when a corrupt police officer kills his only son.

The Black Book also features Ade Laoye, Sam Dede, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Olumide Oworu, Shaffy Bello, Ireti Doyle, Taiwo Ajayi Lycett, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Patric Doyle, Bimbo Manuel Femi Branch, Denola Grey, Kelechi Udegbe, and Nobert Young.

4. Merry Men 3

Merry Men 3: Nemesis, directed by Moses Inwang (Lockdown), begins with the introduction of this installment’s villain, Dafe (Chidi Mokeme), Ayo’s childhood pal. The plot revolves around revenge; Dafe has come to collect penance from Ayo for an incident of betrayal (which is quite ambiguous).

We see Dafe’s cold-bloodedness when he kills all of his gang mates to get his freedom. He travels to Nigeria to exact revenge on Ayo, killing Naz (Jim Iyke) and Remi (Falz) on Ayo’s wedding day and threatening more misery to come.

Dafe’s revenge broadens to encompass corrupt politicians after learning that his mother died as a result of their unethical behavior. He sets out to bring them to justice, blaming Ayo and his gang for the crimes.

5. Blood Vessel

Blood Vessel is a crime thriller film directed by Charles Okpaleke and produced by Play Network Studios. It follows a group of six friends who are caught in the crossfire and attempt to flee to South America.

7. War: Wrath and Revenge

WAR, produced by Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios, is a spinoff of the hit drama series Sons of Caliphate. It follows Nuhu Bula’s journey to the governorship of Kowa.

Which is treacherously organized by his wife Binta, who will stop at nothing to see her husband succeed. When Binta learns that her husband is planning to marry a second time, she will stop at nothing to safeguard her love.
