Bollywood

Hindi cinema is often known as Bollywood. And formerly it is known as Bombay cinema. Also, it is the Indian Hindilanguage film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The term is a portmanteau of “Bombay” and Hollywood“.

Additionally, the industry is related to the Cinema of South India and other Indian film industries, making up Indian Cinema. Bollywood represents 43 percent of Indian net box-office revenue; Tamil and Telugu cinema represent 36 percent, and the remaining regional cinema made up 21 percent in 2014.

Also, Bollywood is one of the largest centres of film production in the world. The most popular commercial genre in Bollywood since the 1970s has been the masala film. This freely mixes different genres including actioncomedyromancedrama, and melodrama along with musical numbers.

Important Information about Bollywood Movies

Bollywood indeed has inspired remakes. However, not maybe in providing fodder to others, but surely in deriving from the best of the lot.

Whether blatant be it copies or cleverly twisted plots, slight dissimilarities, or stark matches, there are records that Bollywood has been copying Hollywood for a while now.

Top Bollywood Movies Copied from Hollywood

Below are some Bollywood movies copied from Hollywood:

1. Ghajini | Memento

Ghajini did indeed shape out to be a nice film. But it would have helped more if the Aamir Khan starrer wouldn’t have turned out to be the copy of Christopher Nolan’s legendary 2000 film Memento.

2. Dostana | I Now pronounce you Chuck and Larry

The 2008 romantic comedy film Dostana was copied from American film, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. And this was in just a year after its release.

Partner is one of those comedies that rest on Bollywood’s funnier side. And it is totally enjoyable. This is even when it was copied from the Will Smith starred flick Hitch.

3. Salaam- e- Ishq | Love Actually

Salaam-e-Ishq has been a magnificent celebration of love that Bollywood idolises. But it still is copied from the 2003 Christmas romantic comedy Love Actually in its theme. And sadly, the plot as well!

4. Dil Hai ki Maanta Nahin | It Happened one Night

Dil hai ke maanta nahin defined romance for many 90s kids. This is even when it was clearly a copy of the American romantic comedy It Happened One Night.

5. Munna Bhai MBBS | Patch Adams

Munna Bhai MBBS is one of Bollywood’s most celebrated and loved movies. However, it breaks our heart to know they copied even this cult film from the English film Patch Adams.

6. Dhamaal | It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world

We all loved Dhamaal. The out-and-out comedy has been a laugh riot. And we don’t really mind even when this has turned out to be a copy of the 1963 epic comedy film. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

7. Jism | Body Heat

Jism, with its bold content, was a rage at the time they released it. However, the movie was a copy of the neo-noir erotic thriller Hollywood film Body Heat.

8. Awara Pagal Deewana | The Whole Nine Yards

A Bollywood crime comedy Awara Pagal Deewana was a copy of the 2000 American film The Whole Nine Yards. However, it still scored it big. And it emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year.

9. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar | Breaking Away

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Breaking Away both are fan favourites in their own leagues. No wonder Bollywood copied one of its iconic from the 1979 Hollywood film.

10. The Godfather (1972) | Sarkar (2005)

The Godfather is the greatest movie there is. No doubt about it. ‘Marlon Brando and Al Pacino’, ’nuff said. The book ‘Godfather’ by Mario Puzo is a genius. These are great works of art and should’ve been left alone.

1. Dil Hai ki Manta Nahi (1991) | It happened one Night (1934)

A true scene-by-scene copy of the Hollywood movie ‘It happened one Night’. If you watch these two movies one after the other, you’ll be amazed at how the storyline and scenes have been imitated. And the fact is that ‘Dil Hai ki Manta Nahi was a huge hit in India.

2. Zinda (2006) | Oldboy (2003)

Wikipedia states that “At a November 2005 press conference, Show East stated, expressed concern that the film was similar to their film, Oldboy. And they were investigating the similarities.

Also, they noted that they did not have the final version of Zinda available to compare it with. Additionally, they stated that if they found there was “strong similarity between the two [films]”, they would contact their lawyers.”

However, the Hindu reviewer Sudhish Kamath and Planet Bollywood reviewer Narbir Gosal both note in their reviews of Zinda that they found the two films to be very similar in terms of plot, and in the depiction of specific scenes.
