   College Student Biography

When you hear the word biography, the first thing that should get to your mind is that biography is an account of the series of events making up your personal life. This article will give you a brief idea of how to write a good biography as a college student.

A professional biography can be said to be an asset to help you stand out, and it may even help you get a job or internship. From my own point of view I’ll advice every college student to develop a biography and then refine it as you pinpoints your goals.

Whether the biography is optional or is a mandatory assignment for a class, it is very necessary to create a brief, biography that will catch the attention of your readers.

This is accomplished with a combination of good writing and also facts about your academic and professional background.

How to Write a Good College Student Biography

1. Identify your Purpose and Audience

Before you start writing your biography, you need to know who you are writing for. It should effectively communicate who you are and what you do.

The biography you would write for a personal web page might be very different than the biography you write for the college.

Try to adjust your tone to make your bio appropriately formal, funny, professional, or personal.

2. Look at the Examples Directed towards your Target Audience.

One of the perfect ways is to understand what your audience will expect from your biography is to look at the bios others in your field have written.

For example, if you’re writing a professional biography for your website in order to market yourself and your skills, you have to look at websites created by others in your field.

See how others present themselves, and try to figure out what you think they did well.

3. Narrow Down your Information

For example, an author’s biography on a book jacket often mentions past writing accomplishments, while an athlete’s biography on a team website often mentions the person’s height and weight.

It is sometimes okay to add a few minor details; they should not make up the majority of your biography.

Remember that your credibility is really necessary here. Keep your details relevant and informative.

4. Write in the Third Person

Writing in the third person will make your biography sound more objective like it’s been written by someone else which can be very useful in a formal setting.

Professionals recommend that you always write professional biography in the third person.

For example, start your biography with a sentence such as “Raphael Smith is a graphic designer in London,” rather than “I am a graphic designer in London.”

Steps in Writing

1. Begin with your N ame and state your Claim to Fame

This should be the very first thing you write. Assume that the people reading the biography know nothing about you. Give your full name, and avoid nicknames.

When it comes to fame I mean what you are known for? What do you do for a living? How much experience do you have?

Don’t leave this to make your readers guess they won’t and they may well lose interest easily if it’s not up front.

Your fame should be explicitly stated in the first or second sentence. Usually, combining it with your name is the best.

2. Mention your most Important Accomplishments, if applicable

If you have earned achievements or awards that are important, include them. This element is tricky and might not be relevant in all situations.

Remember that a biography is not a resume. Do not just list your accomplishments; describe them.

Don’t forget that your audience may have no idea what these accomplishments are unless you tell them.

3. Include Personal Details

This is a very good way to invite the reader to care. It’s also your chance to get a part of your personality across.

Avoid too much self-deprecation in your tone, and don’t include details that are too intimate or for either you or your audience.

4. Conclude by including information on any projects you have in the works

For instance, if you’re a writer, state the title of the new book you’re working on. This should be done in a sentence or two.

a. Include contact information

This is mostly done in the last sentence. If it’s to be published online, be careful with the email address in order to avoid unsolicited mail.

You can also include a couple of ways you can be contacted, such as your Twitter profile or a LinkedIn page.

5. Aim for at least 250 words and try to go through your work

For online publicity, this is 250 words is enough to give the reader a taste of your life and personality without becoming a bore. Your profile should not be longer than 500 words.

It is rare to give a perfect write up at first. Try to go over your biography and you might realize there was information you forgot to include.

It is advisable to go back and update your data once in a while; you will save yourself a lot of work when it is needed again.

Writing a college student biography is actually fun. In case you are not too good at writing, I believe this article will serve as a guide.
