The educational system was reorganized in the following manner: preschool (from 0 to 6 years) was organized into two cycles (0 to 3 years and 3 to 6 years); elementary education (ages 6 to 12 years) was organized into three cycles (6 to 8 years, 8 to 10 years, and 10 to 12 years).

Compulsory education (ages 12 to 16 years) was divided into two cycles (12 to 14 years and 14 to 16 years); and secondary education (16 to 18 years) included either (preparation for university studies) or professional training (vocational training).

One of the innovations of the LOGSE was the introduction of constructivist approaches to learning and teaching based on the ideas of Piaget, schema theory, and the social constructivism of Vygotsky.

In Spain, the education regulating body is “Ministry of Education”. In Spain, it is the “Law Of Education” that makes the regulations.

According to this law, education in Spain is compulsory and should be free from “six years to sixteen years of age”.

This is supported by the government of Spain. From 6 to 16, school attendance is compulsory for every child.

There are two forms of post-secondary school education. The first leads to the title of técnico superior (higher technician) after a period of 1 – 2 years that brings with it the right to register at university too.

Pupils who attended academic higher secondary school may go directly on to anyone of 59 Spanish universities provided they first pass an entrance examination.

Here they may attend a variety of courses beginning with 1-year programs and culminating with doctorates.

A Spanish doctorate follows well-defined guidelines about structure and supervision. It is organized by a university’s Academic Commission, formed of appointed academics and researchers.

In Spain, full-time Ph.D. studies last for a maximum of three years. It is possible to have enrolment on a doctoral program extended for an additional two years, but this must be specially approved by your university’s Academic Commission. Part-time Ph.D. programs last for five years.

Although the main activity during a Ph.D. is research, you may also need to attend training courses, seminars and partake in other academic activities.

These are coordinated by your Academic Commission. Often, Spanish doctorates are formed from two stages, the first stage (during the first-year) focusses on the training courses to the value of 60 ECTS credits; the second stage focusses on research and writing of the thesis.

Tuition fees in Spain are calculated per ECTS credit instead of per semester or year. This is currently set between €22 and €36 per credit.

As most of the set hours of study of a Ph.D. are carried out in the first year, this equates to around €1,500-2,500 for the initial year of study.

Subsequent years still have tuition costs for training and research costs, but these can be typically significantly lower at around €200-600 per year (plus other administration costs).
