How to Reduce the Size of a Picture Using Android Phones/Windows PCs

It’s frustrating to locate the perfect picture only to be unable to utilize it, especially if you don’t have access to an image resizing program like Photoshop.

How to Reduce the Size of a Picture

Using today’s technology, digital pictures may be quickly captured with cameras, smartphones, iPads, and even computer monitors.

If the file isn’t too enormous, uploading pictures to websites or emailing them to friends is usually simple.

To keep bandwidth speeds moving, several sites limit the size of profiles and post pictures. Large image files also take up a significant portion of a hard drive’s total storage space.

The device and operating system you use to determine how you change the size of a picture from a large to a smaller size.

More Details

There are some digital photographs that have millions of pixels and are therefore quite huge. These pictures take up a lot of storage space, which might make emailing or transferring them to another device or computer difficult.

The solution is to compress the image, which reduces the size of the photo without having to resize the image. Find out how to reduce pictures online using these free apps.

A) The Optimizilla “Image Compressor”

Further Ways on How to Reduce Pictures

We’ll discuss and explain the further ways to reduce picture file size here with some easy-to-follow steps.

From Phones and Other Mobile Devices

The smartphone is the most common device that pictures are captured on, but large photos take a lot of storage space.

Changing the file size might require downloading a third-party application or moving the file to your computer.

One quick way to change the file size with an iPhone is to email the photo to a person or to yourself at another email account.

The email program asks you whether you want to send the photo as a small, medium or large file. Selecting the small or medium file reduces the file size.

Keep in mind that this will not preserve resolution. The smallest files may be pixelated, meaning the image may appear grainy or “blocky.”

More Details

Third-party applications shrink the overall size of photos while they are still on the phone, so you don’t need to email or download them.

For iPhones, the Shrink My Pictures app is one of several apps available in the App Store. Once downloaded, launch the app, which instructs you to add photos.

This opens the entire Photos library. Choose the photo or photos you want to reduce file size on and select done.

The Options tab contains compression adjustments to keep quality as high as possible on important pictures.

Note that compressing an image reduces its quality.

The Photo Compress app available at Google Play does the same thing for Android users. Download the app and launch it.

Select the photos to compress and adjust the size by choosing Resize Image. Be sure to keep the aspect ratio on so the resizing doesn’t distort the height or width of the photo.

Squoosh is a new player on the block from Google Chrome Labs. Like Compressor.IO, it includes many image file formats, including some beta versions. It’s the only service I’ve seen that handles the newer AVIF format.

Like the other services, the process begins by uploading your file. The initial pass will convert using the same file format.

However, you can do additional edits with other file formats. Using a JPEG XL (Beta) option, I could get the best compression, which was 4% more efficient than the default pass.

What’s also appealing is the options that show after the first pass. You can also reduce the number of colours via a reduce palette option and even resize.

How to Change Image Resolution to Reduce Picture Size

Another way to reduce your picture’s size is to change the image’s resolution. This can impact the quality of the image.

On Windows 10, there are multiple ways to change a picture’s resolution.

1) Use Paint to Change an Image’s Resolution

You can use Windows 10’s built-in Paint app to change the resolution of your images. This way, you don’t need to download or install any third-party apps on your PC. Just follow these steps;

Open the folder containing the image you want to reduce the size for

Right-click the image and select Open with > Paint

When the image opens in Paint, select Resize at the top.

In the Resize and Skew window that opens, select Pixels from the Resize section.

In the Horizontal box, enter the new width of your photo in pixels. Remember this should be smaller than the current width.

You don’t have to specify anything in the Vertical field as it’ll automatically get the right dimensions based on the Horizontal field’s value.

Select OK at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

Select File > Save as and choose an image format to save your compressed image.

2) Use Shutterstock to Reduce a Picture Size

Shutterstock is known for its stock photos repository. Besides offering thousands of stock photos, the site offers an online image resizer (free), too.

You can use this online tool to change the resolution of your images, making your images smaller in terms of file sizes. This is how you do it;

• Head over to the Shutterstock Image Resizer site in your web browser

• On the site, select Upload and choose the pictures you’d like to compress

• In the Step 2section on the site, select the Select an image size dropdown menu and choose a new resolution for our photo.

• To specify custom dimensions, select Custom from the dropdown menu and then enter the custom width and height of the photo in the boxes.

• Lastly, select Download to download the resized image to your computer.

How to Combine Images into One Composite Image in Photoshop CS5

How to Reduce the Size of a Picture Using Android Phones/Windows PCs

One of the main advantages of Adobe Photoshops is its ability to overlay multiple images onto a single surface to create a composite.

Designers often employ the technique when placing incongruous images in the same environment to create a surreal effect. Composites can also be made from different versions of the same photograph.

For example, if you have two shots of the same landscape at the same angle, but at different times of day, you can make a composite to blend the two together, highlighting your favourite aspects of each.

1) Open Photoshop, and click File at the far left of the top toolbar, then select Open. Navigate to one file you wish to use in your composite, and double click it.

This opens the file in Photoshop. Do this for all the files you wish to use. Go to File, and select New. This opens a window asking you to specify the dimensions of the file. Enter the dimensions you wish and click OK.

2) Press the “V” key to select the move tool. Check the box labelled “Auto-Select” in the upper left-hand corner of your screen, below the top-most toolbar.

Click inside one of your images. Hold the mouse button down, drag the image to the new image, and release the button to drop it. The image appears on the canvas of the new image. Do this for all your images.

Note that each image is in its own layer. You can verify this by looking at the layers panel in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.

More Steps

3) Click and hold one of your images, and drag it to the desired location on the canvas. Resize the image by going to edit in the top toolbar, and choosing Free Transform from the menu options.

An outline appears around the image. Hold in the shift key, then click and drag one corner of the image. This changes its size.

You can also rotate the image by gradually moving the cursor away from the corner until the cursor indicator becomes a curved arrow.

4) Click to select an image whose opacity you wish to adjust. Reducing the opacity of an image allows images in layers beneath it to become visible, thus creating a blend.

Click and hold on to the word “Opacity” in the upper right-hand corner of the Layers panel and drag to the left to reduce the opacity of the image.

In photoshop, when one layer is above another, the top layer blocks the bottom layer from view.

If a layer is blocking the content you wish to be visible, click and drag the layer you wish to be visible to a higher position in the layer panel.

How to Resolve Issues Faced with Pictures Editing Software

Pictures-editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP and Skitch allows various levels of editing, image resolution adjustments and image manipulation.

This software is often used for much more than merely changing an image size, but resizing is easy when you need it. You can find instructions for these programs on the web. However, they include;

Browser Issues

The Facebook photo upload tool makes use of Adobe Flash, so ensure your browser is running the latest version of the plugin, which can be downloaded from Adobe’s site.

In addition, ensure you are running the most recent version of your browser, which includes the newest compatibility patches and bug fixes.

Disabling the extensions running on your usual browser or uninstalling and reinstalling the application may fix the problem if you can’t upload pictures in another browser software.

Mobile Apps

Problems posting photos from a mobile device such as a phone or tablet can often be solved by rebooting your device to clear out any temporary files or data that may have been corrupted.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the Facebook app may also resolve the issue, as this resets the app’s configuration settings and enables you to re-establish the connection to the Facebook site.

Always keep your mobile operating system updated to the newest version to ensure compatibility with Facebook and its apps.

Internet Connection

If you have an unstable or intermittent connection to the Internet, it may prevent you from transferring large amounts of data (such as photos) while smaller uploads (such as text) work without any problems.

Use a connection test site such as to determine the strength and quality of your link to the Web. If possible, switch to a more stable connection or try disconnecting and reconnecting again.

Photo Formats

Facebook can experience problems with images more than 15MB in size, or saved in formats other than JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF and TIFF.

You may have to shrink your pictures or convert them to a different format before they can be uploaded successfully.

If you are struggling to upload images that have been processed in a photo editor application, try using the original images instead.

Facebook Faults

Temporary technical faults with the Facebook platform can knock out the service and prevent you from uploading pictures.

Wait a few minutes before attempting the upload again to see if this is the case.

Any known problems or issues with Facebook’s network are usually reported on the Facebook Developer Platform Status page or within the Facebook Help pages.

How to Use RealPlayer Converter

The RealPlayer Video Converter supports drag-and-drop file operation, so after launching the program, add a video to the conversion queue by dragging it from a desktop folder.

Choose a conversion format by clicking “Convert To” and selecting an option from the menu, which includes several preset formats, such as iPod, PSP and Zune.

If your device isn’t listed, click “Create Custom” and choose a video codec from the Format menu. Supported codecs include FLV, MP4, 3GP, AVI and many others.

How to Reduce Video Size on RealPlayer

RealPlayer includes a free video converter for compressing videos, resizing the aspect ratio and converting files to a wide range of formats.

While you can’t specify an arbitrary video size with this software, you can edit the bitrate and resolution to make a file smaller. Reducing video size comes with a tradeoff; your converted video’s quality is also reduced.

Making a Video File Smaller

To reduce the file’s size, click the “Quality” menu and choose a minimal setting, such as “Low.” Reduce the file’s size further by choosing a low setting from the Resolution menu.

Depending on the video’s original size, you may have resolution options such as 360p, 240p or 144p.

By default, the output resolution is set to Automatic, so if you use one of the conversion presets, the resolution is reduced to fit your device’s screen.

In the Audio Details section, choose a low setting from the Quality menu. By default, 128 kbps is chosen, but you can reduce the file’s size further by choosing “96 kbps” or “64 kbps.”

After choosing your settings, click “OK” to convert the video. Confirm that the video’s size is small enough by selecting it in File Explorer and reading the file size at the bottom of the window.

How to Reduce PDF File Size

There are several ways to reduce a document’s file size to attach in PDF format in CTI Navigator.  If you have the original document(s) and a scanner, you can:

1) Re-scan the document at a lower resolution. This usually is the quickest and easiest fix.

If you scanned the document in colour, try scanning in greyscale. If your grayscale scanned file is too large, try scanning as Black and White (1-bit resolution).

2) Re-scan the document in parts (or separate one document into several smaller documents) so that each individual file size is less than 1 MB. For example, Part 1 and Part 2; or Main Document and separate Addenda documents.

3) Scan each page of a multiple-page document as an image, save each image as its own file, and then use the Create PDFtool in CTI Navigator Desktop’s Document Manager to link these image files together in one PDF document.

For instructions on using CTI’s create PDF tool, see “Use Document Manager & Create PDF” on CTI’s Help and Tutorials website.

To convert an existing document (or image) file to a pdf formatted file, you can use free web-based document conversion services that do not need to be installed on your computer (such as

How to Prevent PowerPoint from Expanding Pictures

PowerPoint will faithfully reproduce the original format of a picture that you insert, even if it means expanding it to a large size.

The average slide in a PowerPoint presentation is about 1024 by 768 pixels or about 0.8 megapixels.

If you insert an 8MP picture in your small business presentation, PowerPoint will expand it to full size, unless you insert it using a placeholder through one of the PowerPoint layouts.

The placeholders automatically re-size images and other objects to fit within the pre-set boundaries.

• Launch PowerPoint and click on the arrow below the “New Slide” button on the Home tab.

• Choose “Picture with Caption.”

• Click the icon in the middle of the placeholder. PowerPoint launches a dialogue box for inserting a picture. Browse to the image you want and double click it. It will be inserted on the slide in the placeholder’s size.

• Re-size the picture on the slide. You’re not locked into the placeholder size. If you want the image to be larger or smaller, you can adjust it using the Format tab in the Microsoft Office ribbon.

Remove Image’s Metadata to Reduce the File Size

Many of your images have certain information saved in them. This information is called metadata, and this usually includes details like the name of the camera that was used to capture the image, various camera settings when the photo was captured, and so on.

If you don’t intend to use this information, you can remove this information which will reduce the file size of your image.

Note that you won’t see a significant difference in your image’s file size, as the metadata rarely uses too much space.

• On your Windows PC, right-click the image for which you want to reduce the file size and choose Properties.

• Select the Details to tab in the Properties window.

• At the bottom of the Details tab, select Remove Properties and Personal Information.

• On the following screen, choose Create a copy with all properties removed and select OK at the bottom.

• Windows will create a copy of your image in the same folder as the original image. This copied version of your image has all the metadata removed from it.

Easy Steps to Compressing a Video into an Email

Easy Steps to Compressing a Video into an Email

If a picture’s worth a thousand words, a video’s worth a million, but since videos tend to have large file sizes, it can be tricky to get them from one place to another.

You can make video files easier to handle by compressing them, which reduces their file size and makes them compact enough to send via email.

A) Zip It on Windows

With your Windows computer, you can compress a video file by zipping it. It’s like stuffing your file into a smaller, more movable container, and it shouldn’t mess with the video’s quality in the long run. Follow these steps;

After composing your email, click Attach File.

Find the video you want to attach.

Right-click the video file and click Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

After Windows zips the video, attach it to the email and send it on its way.

B) Compress It on a Mac

Mac computers work a little differently, but you can still use one to compress a video file. If you need to select a portion of your video or edit it, you do that first in iMovie. Your Mac came with iMovie already installed.

• Open iMovie and click on the downward-facing arrow in the menu bar to import video from a camera or a file on your computer.

• Locate your video file in the window that opens and click it to open it in iMovie.

• Drag on the video strip to select the portion of the video you want to use.

• To export your video, click File > Share > Email and choose Small to make the file size smaller.

• Click Share to open the small version of the video on a blank email screen.

• Address the email and include a message. Send it as usual.

If you don’t need to shorten or edit the video, control-click on the video icon and select Compress from the contextual menu that opens to create a smaller version of the video.

C) Convert Video on an Android Device

Your best bet for reducing a video’s file size on your Android phone is to download an app to do it for you. The Video Converter Android app is one option.

If you opt for the free Lite version of the app, you can compress a video manually:

Download and launch the Video Converter Android app and import the video you want to compress.

Tap Convert at the bottom of the screen.

Select Manual profile. Select the video settings: Codec, MPEG-4; FPS, 23.98; Res, 176 x 144; Bitrate, Keep Original.

The app will shrink the video size considerably and make it easier to send via email.

D) Slimming Video on an iPhone

You’re probably best off using a video compression app on your iPhone or another iOS device to shrink the size of a video file. One such app is called Video Slimmer.

• Launch the Video Slimmer app on your iOS device.

• Go to More to choose the dimensions and resolutions for the smaller video.

• Tap the + button to load the video you want to shrink with the app.

• Select Slim Now!

The app reduces your video to your specified dimensions and resolution, and it’s ready for email attachment.

E) Using the Cloud

Attaching a video to an email might be your best option for sending video files to friends and family members who aren’t familiar with cloud technology like Dropbox and Google Drive.

Those platforms are probably the smoothest way to transport video files without altering their quality.

On Dropbox, all you have to do is upload the video to a shared Dropbox folder, which gives everyone who has access to the folder access to the video as well. You can do this on a laptop, desktop, tablet, or smartphone.

With Google Drive, you upload a video file to your drive and share the file with anyone you want.

Both Dropbox and Google Drive allow you to generate file-sharing links, so you can copy and paste the link to the video file in an email to give your friends, family or co-workers access to the video.

How to Fix Pixelated Pictures on Photo Editing Websites

Whether you’re using an online or computer-based image-editing application, there’s little you can do to fix a pixelated picture, but there are a few things you can do to salvage as much of the picture’s quality as possible.

Whichever type of application you use, you’ll need to load the picture onto a personal computer before you attempt to fix it.

i) Basic Fix

Assortments of online image-editing software applications give you a few basic tools to repair the content of your digital images.

Upload the image you want to edit to the application’s website through a portal that is typically labelled “Upload.”

Once the pixelated image is on the application’s website, you can attempt to fix it by choosing the application’s basic “Fix” or “Repair” tool.

This option takes the pixels and fills in any gaps or imperfections that exist by duplicating nearby content to smooth out the picture’s details.

ii) Hiding Method

You can use an online image-editing website’s tools to mask or hide your pixelated picture’s imperfections by using the site’s special effects features.

Special effects tools alter the image’s contents in a manner that makes them display differently.

For instance, using the blueprint or painting special effects tool changes the image to appear as if it was partly illustrated, making the image’s pixelated state less noticeable or not noticeable at all.

This method works best with images that are only slightly pixelated.

iii) Cropping, Contrast and Brightness

If only part of your image is pixelated, you can use an online image-editing website’s crop tool to eliminate the imperfect parts of the picture.

Adjusting your image’s contrast and brightness levels are also an effective way to cover up digital image imperfections.

Each of these tools is available in the photo-editing website’s tool palette. If you employ these methods, be sure to save the changes you make before you save the photo directly to the website or download it back onto your computer.

iv) Considerations

Sometimes, a slightly pixelated picture’s imperfections are less noticeable if you reduce the photo’s size.

If the picture is intended for use on the Internet, such as on a blog or social networking website, a smaller picture is acceptable and is an effective way to minimize, if not eliminate, the pixelation’s evidence.

If you’re adept at using advanced image-editing software applications that operate directly on your computer, such as Photoshop, you can use the program’s brush, stamp and clone tools to smooth out the contents of your pixelated image.

Finally, you can quickly and easily reduce the file size of your photographs using the methods indicated above.

If you don’t want to install apps, you can use web-based tools to reduce your pictures, or you can use installable applications.
