About IATA

IATA was established in Havana, Cuba, on the 19th of April 1945. And it is the prime vehicle for inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable, secure, and economical air services – for the benefit of the world’s consumers.

Also, the internationally scheduled air transport industry is over 100 times larger than it was in 1945. And few industries can match the dynamism of that growth.

However, this would have been much less spectacular without the standards, practices, and procedures developed within IATA.

Additionally, at its founding, IATA had 57 members from 31 nations. And these were mostly in Europe and North America. However, today it has some 290 members from 120 nations in every part of the globe.

In April 2020, it celebrated 75 years of working together with member airlines to make aviation the business of freedom.

IATA’s Structure

A guiding idea of IATA’s structure is “Global Development, Regional Delivery”. Here, the Head Office divisions drive the development of global standards, systems, and advocacy positions.
