Indian Gay Celebrities: Homosexuality remains a topic of debate and controversies around the world. And in India it is the same. However, some celebrities are changing the views and societal constructs for a more inclusive society.

The Supreme Court’s judgment on Section 377 may have opened door for love and acceptance of being a gay. However, please note that being gay is not new to Indian shores. Also, it is a fact that some gay celebrities work in Bollywood.

However, here the trend shows fashion industry has a large number of gay and celebrities in India. In this article, we shall be looking at famous gay people in India. However, before then, what is being gay about?

What Does Being Gay Means?

Gay is a term that primarily refers to a homosexual person or the trait of being homosexual. The term was originally used to mean “carefree”, “cheerful”, or “bright and showy”. Also, the term’s use as a reference to male homosexuality may date as early as the late 19th century.

However, its use gradually increased in the mid-20th century. Also, in modern English, gay has come to be used as an adjective, and as a noun, referring to the communitypractices and cultures associated with homosexuality.

Additionally, in the 1960s, gay became the word favored by homosexual men to describe their sexual orientation. And by the end of the 20th century, the word gay was recommended by major LGBT groups and style guides to describe people attracted to members of the same sex.

Ace Designer Wendell Rodricks has always been open about his sexuality. And he is not one to shy away from publically speaking about it.

Also, Rodricks has been with his partner for thirty-odd years now. And he has often credited his accepting family for having no problems being a homosexual in the 70s and 80s.

  • Vasu Primlani

Primlani is India’s first openly gay comic. And he has had a fair share of challenges in his way. He was raped as a child and even spent some time in jail.

He said in an interview that “We need to understand that it is not about homosexuals or heterosexuals, but lovers and haters”.

  • Keshav Suri

Hotelier Keshav Suri is the Executive Director of the Lalit Suri Hospitality Group that owns the LaLit chain of hotels.

On the scrapping of section 377, the openly gay scion said, “If not now, then when?” Suri was one of the petitioners who took the fight for the decriminalization of gay sex to India’s top court.

  • Ritu Dalmia

Food entrepreneur Ritu Dalmia is also among the petitioners who filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the legal validity of Section 377.

Dalmia admitted that she had a hard time understanding her sexual preference. And that this was only discovered in her 20s. However, love and support from friends and family have helped her through her turmoil.

  • Parvez Sharma

Parvez Sharma is a New York-based Indian filmmaker, author, and journalist. He is a recipient of the 2018 Guggenheim Fellowship in the film/video category.

Also, he was amongst the 173 fellows selected from 3000 applicants in the 94th year of the fellowship, which originally started in 1925. And, Sharma is best known for his two films A Jihad for Love, and A Sinner in Mecca

However, in an official press release by the foundation, President Edward Hirsch said, “The winners of the 94th annual competition as “the best of the best…This diverse group of scholars, artists, and scientists are appointed on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise.”

  • Vikram Seth

Vikram Seth, (born 20 June 1952) is an Indian novelist and poet. And he has written several novels and poetry books. Also, he has received several awards.

Seth’s collections of poetry such as Mappings and Beastly Tales are notable contributions to the Indian English language poetry canon.

  • Ismail Merchant

Ismail Merchant was born as Ismail Noor Muhammad Abdul Rahman. He was born on 25 December 1936. Also, he was an Indian-born film producer and director.

He worked for many years in collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions. This included director and Merchant’s longtime professional and domestic partner James Ivory as well as screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala.

He is a Novelist and poet by profession. Also, he has received several accolades such as Padma Shri, Sahitya Akademi Award, Crossword Book Award, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman and WH Smith Literary Award.

He has directed films with a distinct focus on homosexuality. And is notable works include, ‘The Pink Mirror’ and ‘Yours Emotionally.’

His representation of the closeted gay community in India has been considered ground-breaking. The Pink Mirror continues to be a banned movie by the CBFC in India. And he has been spreading awareness among the sexually minor sections in India as a gay activist.

  • Karan Johar

This is probably the most famous of the rumored gay men in the country, and established director-producer of Bollywood. He has remained increasingly private about his sexuality. And he is a leader in the movie industry.

Also, he has produced numerous hits under the banner of Dharma Productions. Additionally, he has also won two Filmfare awards so far for ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and ‘My Name is Khan’.

In his biography ‘An Unsuitable Boy’ he remarks on his sexuality by saying, “Everybody knows what my sexual orientation is. I don’t need to scream it out. And if I need to spell it out, I won’t only because I live in a country where I could be jailed for saying this.”

  • Bobby Darling

Booby was born as a transsexual man in India and known as Pankaj Sharma. He is working in Bollywood.

Also, Bobby underwent a sex change transformation. She acted in 18 movies playing a gay man until she transformed. She has also appeared on the popular TV show ‘Big Boss.’
