 Joseph Mayer was a British goldsmith, antiquarian, and collector. He was a major contributor to society. They dispersed his personal library prints and manuscripts through auction, therefore, his net worth remains unknown.

Facts About Joseph Mayer

Joseph was born on 23rd February 1803 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. His father was Samuel Mayer, a tanner, and currier. Joseph died unmarried on 19th January 1886 at Pennant House, Bebington, Cheshire.

His educational background is not stated.

Career

Joseph settled in Liverpool at 20 as a jeweler and goldsmith. His business was so successful that he also indulged his passion for collecting.

Also, he devoted himself to a volunteer movement in 1860 and became captain of the Liverpool borough guard. Joseph single-handedly raised and clothed the corps of volunteers at Bebington, Cheshire.

Moreover, he was president of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire from 1866 to 1869. Some works he contributed include:

  2. Roscoe and the Influence of his Writings on the Fine Arts.
  3. Shotwick Church.
  4. Liverpool Pottery.
  5. The Arming of Levies in the Hundred of Wirral.

  7. The preparations of the Country of Kent to resist the Spanish Armada.
  8. On The Art of Pottery.

However, in 1873, Joseph retired from business and after his death, his private library, manuscripts and prints were auctioned in 1887.
