Students who want to study abroad in Dublin should consider looking a little outside of the city at the charming Irish town of Maynooth.

This four-week summer program presents the best of both worlds, the opportunity to live and study in Ireland’s only university town in a rural setting while being only a half-hour away from the hustle and bustle of Dublin.

5. USAC Ireland: Galway – Irish Literature, History, and Music

The Galway program consists of one 5week session offering academic coursework in literature, history, theatre, music, and the Gaelic language taught by established Irish and US scholars.

Many of these courses include enticing field trips offering hands-on experience with the subject matter, such as walking tours of Galway, outings to the Connemara Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area), live theatre, and guest lectures by leading playwrights and directors, private Irish film screenings, and private in class music concerts by leading traditional musicians and singers.

Participation in additional program field trips and the optional tour field study of Dublin also form an integral part of the program.

Those with Irish roots can enroll in a 1credit course to trace your family’s genealogy. Past students have even connected with local Irish relatives from their research in this course and two recent students even discovered they were related, dating back to the 1600s.

6. USAC Ireland: Galway – Irish Literature, History, and Music

Explorations in Ireland and the Middle East program begin in Dublin. During the first portion of the program, students take a single course titled Life Cycle of Peace and Conflict: Lessons Learned in Northern Ireland, using the country as a case study to focus on peace and conflict theory.

Co-curricular activities such as visits to historic city sites and political walking tours will enhance student understanding of the sensitive cultural and societal roots of conflict.

Also, a study tour of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will contextualize the coursework.

The new understanding of peace and conflict will inform the student experience in Amman, where participants will examine how the Arab/Israeli conflict, regional conflicts such as those in Lebanon, Yemen or Iraq, and tribal conflicts are being addressed.

During the second portion of the program, students enroll in one course, Conflict Resolution and Management: Beyond the Arab-Israeli Conflict, which is complemented by study tours to Mount Nebo, the Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, and the ancient city of Petra.

Students may opt to extend their stay in Amman and participate in the AMIDEAST Intensive Arabic Program for four weeks of intensive language study.

7. The Gaiety School of Acting

The National Theater School of Ireland is a Not for Profit organization founded in the year 1986 by the internationally renowned theater director Joe Dowling.

The School is now widely regarded as the country’s premier training facility for actors.

Their policy is to train actors for theater, film, and television. The School has a broad offering; ranging from its two-year full-time intensive actor training, adult One Year Part-Time training, adult 10-week courses, and weekend masterclasses.

The School also hosts a range of courses for international students delivered both in conjunction with US partner organizations and available for solo applicants.

The School has been providing professional actor training for over 30 years.

8. Exploring Ireland Health Care Services

The purpose of this program is to provide participants with the opportunity to explore a variety of mental health and community psychiatric health care services in Ireland

For satisfactory participation in this program, participants will receive 3 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit.

Nursing and Health Study students will learn about the history of Ireland’s mental health care system, Ireland’s mental health services, Ireland’s community/public health system, Ireland’s Mental Health Commission, Ireland’s mental health law, patient rights of Ireland’s mentally ill, and the preparation and education of Ireland’s psychiatric nurses and mental health care workers.

Also, students will be exposed to the cultural opportunities that the beautiful country of Ireland has to offer.

9. Irish Literature, Theatre, and Culture

This summer the Performing Arts and English Departments of UMass Boston will offer students a unique opportunity to study Irish literature and drama intensively on campus followed by travel to Ireland to visit and explore the settings that inspired the works we study.

Although a small island, Ireland has produced a remarkable number of extraordinary poets, fiction writers, and dramatists.

This course will start by connecting some of the representative dots on the literary timeline between the death of parliamentary nationalist Charles Stewart Parnell in 1891 and the production of Sean O’Casey’s drama The Plough and the Stars in 1926.

After a month of academic study on the campus of UMass Boston, students will travel to Dublin, Ireland for a ten-day immersion experience in Irish literature, theatre, and culture, attending plays at the famous Abbey Theatre, visiting Joyce’s tower, exploring Kilmainham Gaol, and more.

The course will culminate in a visit to the Aran Islands, off the coast of Galway, the westernmost point in Europe and the inspiration for several of the works we will have read.

Undergraduate participants register for either THRART 410 or ENGL 415. Both are 3 credits and fulfill requirements for the Theatre Arts major and the English major respectively.

Students who wish to extend and deepen their academic experience may also register and earn 3 additional credits by taking THRART 479 or ENGL 455.

10. Study Abroad Ireland

This program is designed to increase awareness of Irish culture through academic instruction & cultural excursions to help create greater global awareness.

Students choose 6 accredited college credits from ART142-Intro to Digital Photography (3 cr), REL 250-History of Religion in Ireland-Ancient to Medieval (3 cr), or STO290-Irish Storytelling (3 cr).
