Most Respected Professions in Nigeria: There are several professions in Nigeria but some are respected more than others even if they sometimes don’t pay well. In this article, I will be discussing the 5 most respected professions in Nigeria.

In every home, parents advise their children to engage certain professions and turn down their career aspirations for other professions with a simple reason that it’s not good and not honorable.

1. Doctors

Doctors may be primary care physicians, or they may focus in a particular area of medicine such as internal medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatry, endocrinology, ophthalmology, or anesthesiology.

This is probably the most respected job in Nigeria. Every parent wants his/her child to study medicine to become a successful doctor.

Children who tell their parents they want to be doctors are given every single push they need to help them achieve their dream.

Surgeons are medical doctors that specialize in carrying out delicate operations on sick people. Surgeons are also among the list of the top paid jobs in Nigeria because they charge a huge sum of money before they can carry out any operation.

2. Pilots

An aircraft pilot or an aviator is a person who controls the flight of an aircraft by operating its directional flight controls.

Not many have the opportunity to do this but we all know the respect these people command. It takes years to train and to be qualified as a pilot and to think of the lives that they are responsible for every time they fly, you’ll love them

Pilots just like medical doctors have a high degree of responsibility for the lives of passengers in the plane; hence they should be highly skilled and also trained personnel who know exactly what they are doing.

In Nigeria, they earn from close to N3.4m up to N7.4 million and more in some cases even more.

3. Lawyers

A lawyer or attorney is a someone who practices law, as an advocate, attorney, attorney at law, barrister, barrister-at-law, bar-at-law, civil law notary, counsel, counselor, counselor, a counselor at law, solicitor, chartered legal executive, or servant preparing, interpreting and also applying the law, but not as a paralegal or charter executive secretary

4. Engineers – Petroleum/Chemical/Electrical/Mechanical 


Engineers, as practitioners of engineering, are professionals who invent, design, analyze, build, and test machines, systems, structures, and materials to fulfill objectives and requirements while considering the restrictions imposed by practicality, regulation, safety, and cost.

This is a very technical job and needs a lot of time that must be dedicated to reading and also studying in order to acquire the necessary certifications to practice.

And then those in the Oil and Gas industry whether up or downstream command the highest pay of them all.

They take home a huge pay package of about N3.5m – N6.5m annually, which is good in an economy like ours that is not so stable and also still considered as developing.

5. Bankers

A banker is a worker of a bank or financial institution that services the financial needs of clients. These customers can be individuals or institutions, both with different needs.

A banker tries to maximize the profit of a bank while maintaining appropriate risk levels.

Who wouldn’t like to work in a bank? Everyone wants to work in a bank, it’s as if you get to own all the money at the place.

Banking jobs are really respected in Nigeria. Investment bankers are charged with the responsibility of helping establishments, government, and their agencies raise money by selling securities in the primary market.

They assist public and private establishments in raising funds in the capital market. Investment bankers mostly work in Hedge funds, banks, consulting firms, investment advisory and also asset management companies.

Investment bankers earn a lot because of the job responsibility. The average salary for an investment banker ranges from ₦300,000 – ₦500,000 monthly
