It focuses on where health care services of contributors are paid from the common pool of funds contributed by the participants of the Scheme.

In other words, note. It is a pre-payment plan. And participants pay a fixed regular amount.

The amount/funds are pooled. Thus, allowing the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) to pay for those needing medical attention.

Furthermore, the aim of the NHIS is to improve the health of all Nigerians at an affordable cost.

What is Health Insurance?

Health Insurance is a social security system. And it guarantees the provision of needed health services to people. However, this is on the payment of token contributions at regular intervals.

It is totally committed to securing universal coverage and access to adequate and affordable health care. Additionally, it is in order to improve the health status of Nigerians.

Objectives of National Health Insurance Scheme

The following are some of the objectives of the NHIS:

1. It aims to ensure that every Nigerian has access to good health care services.

2. Also, it aims to protect families from the financial hardship of huge medical bills.

3. Furthermore, it aims to limit the rise in the cost of health care services.

4. Additionally, it aims to ensure equitable distribution of health care costs. And this is among different income groups.

5. NHIS also regulate private health Insurance operated by HMOs.

NHIS has developed various programmes to cover different segments of society. And this in order to ensure that every Nigerian has access to good health care services.

1. Formal Sector Social Health Insurance Programme

Here the health care of employees in the Formal Sector is paid from funds pooled through the contributions of employees and employers.
