Overview and History of Van Mahotsav Day

The name Van Mahotsava means ‘the festival of trees’. Van Mahotsava is an annual tree-planting festival in July. And during this festival, they plant thousands of trees all over India.

Also, in 1950, it started by K. M. Munshi, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food.

It created awareness in the mind of the people for the conservation of forests and the planting of new trees. Also, Van Mahotsav is celebrated as a festival of life. In India, it started as a crusade to save mother earth.

It began in July 1947 after a flourishing tree planting drive was undertaken in Delhi, in which national leaders like Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Jawaharlal Nehru took part.

They simultaneously celebrated the festival in several states in India. Since then, they planted thousands of saplings of diverse species.

This was  with the energetic participation of the locals and various agencies like the forest department.

The following are some aims of the Van Mahotsav day festival:

1. It is to encourage Indians to support tree planting and tending.

6. It targets providing food and shade for cattle.

The first week of July is just the right time for planting trees in most parts of India. This is because it coincides with the monsoon. 

Also, Van Mahotsav literally stands for Forest (van) and Festival (Mahotsav). It is a Hindi word which means ‘Tree Festival’. And they observed annually this tree planting festival, over a period of the week starting from 1st July to 7th July.

Also, it is celebrated to raise awareness among the masses about the importance of trees, their plantation, and conservation.

As pointed out earlier, they initiated it in 1950 by K. M. Munshi, the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the populace’s mind for the conservation of forests and planting of trees.

Celebration of Van Mahotsav Day Festival

People celebrate Van Mahotsav by planting trees or saplings in homes, offices, schools, colleges, etc. Also, awareness campaigns are held at various levels.

Furthermore, bovel promotions like the free circulation of trees are also taken up by various organizations and volunteers.

The planting of trees during the festival serves various purposes like providing alternative fuel. Also, it is for the increase of production of food resources.

It helps create shelter belts around fields to increase productivity and provide food for cattle.

The first ever national awakening to the necessity of planting trees and attempts at tree rehabilitation on a national scale came in July 1947. And this was with a successful tree plantation drive in Delhi.
Also, such drives are now conducted around the whole country. On this day educational institutes organize various events like planting saplings, awareness walk, screening of documentaries etc.
Similar activities are also undertaken by governmental and concerned private organizations. Other activities include exhibitions, seminars, distribution of free saplings to citizens and so on.

They plant native trees during Van Mahotsav. And this is owing to its ability to adapt to the local conditions better. Also, it is because these trees have a high survival rate.

Native trees are also believed to support birds, insects, and animals. This is as the onset of monsoon in India usually begins in the first week of July.

It is considered an ideal choice of conducting the festival. Also, some observe that most saplings planted during this time have more chances of survival than those planted during other times of the year.
