Six Proven Ways to Identify Plastic Rice

Plastic rice is made of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds and can lead to cancers, birth defects, immune system suppression and developmental problems in children.

However, here are simple tips that will help you to identify plastic rice easily:

1. The Glass Water Rice Test

Put a tablespoon of raw rice into a glass of cold water and stir it. The natural rice will remain at the bottom while the plastic rice will float on top. You can then remove the rice on the top and cook the ones below.

2. Hot Oil Technique

Heat some oil in a pan and make sure it’s really hot. Drop some grains of rice into the oil, the plastic rice will melt while the natural rice will fry nicely.

his is similar to the glass of water technique, but it requires boiling oil.

Drop a few grains of rice into a bowl of hot oil, and in this case, the plastic rice will submerge and go to the bottom of the bowl while the real rice will float above.

In addition to this, the plastic rice will also form a layer on top of oil from the plastic that has melted.

3. Fire Rice Test

Take a handful of rice and burn it, the plastic rice will melt but the natural rice will only have the smell of burnt rice.

Plastic is known to give out a peculiar smell while burning and this simple trick can help you identify if the rice is real or fake.

Take a few grains of rice and burn it with a match stick, if the rice is made of plastic you will see the product curling in and giving out a peculiar smell whereas the real rice may turn black but will not give out the smell of plastic.

4. Mould Test

Mould is a fungus. Boil the rice and place it in a warm place for at least 2-3 days. Check the rice after 3 days. If there is no presence of mould on the top, then it is plastic rice. This is because plastic is not affected by temperature or weather.

5. Boiling Test

Boil rice and observe. If it begins to form thick layers, then it is the plastic rice.

This technique of checking the quality of rice is foolproof but takes a lot of time. Simply boil the rice and leave it outside in a box for 2-3 days.

If the boiled rice is made of plastic, it will remain as it is and will not have any fungus. However, real rice will develop fungus if it is kept outside for such a long time at room temperature.

6. Pound Test

Put a few grains of rice in a mortar pound with a pestle, and then observe the colour of the powder. If the colour is white, then it is natural rice but if the colour is yellow, then it is plastic rice.

These are all the methods to identify plastic rice, so I hope you find this information helpful in distinguishing between plastic rice and natural rice.
