About First State Bank

First State Bank was established in 1935 as Farmers and Merchants State Bank. As a community bank, they provide a much-needed service to the farmers, ranchers, and business owners in Athens and throughout Henderson County and the surrounding communities.

Their focus on maintaining the friendliness and personal attention of a community bank is one reason they have been serving some of the same customers and their families for nearly 80 years.

At the same time, they are thrilled to welcome new customers daily.  Everything they do is focused on providing a positive banking experience for the individuals, families, and businesses that trust us with their financial services.

Since those early days in the 1930s, their bank has grown tremendously, from one location in Athens to two.  They’ve also opened branches in Corsicana, Mabank, Malakoff, and Gun Barrel City.

Today their six locations account for more than $487 million in assets and their employees are key members of all the communities we serve.  Despite this phenomenal growth, their commitment to customer service remains the same.

The mission of First State Bank is to build mutually beneficial customer relationships by being the bank and employer of choice in the communities they serve. First State Bank believes what sets them apart is their focus on customer service.

Every employee of their bank cares enough to get to know their customers personally.  When you walk in the door of any of their six branches, their friendly staff is always on hand to say hello.

That’s the way they do business and they believe it’s the cornerstone of their success.
