Development of a Web-Based Hostel Management System

ABSTRACT

Web-based Hostel Management System is an online application developed for managing various activities in the hostel. This system helps improve hostel services for all the students needing hostel accommodation, especially by the provision of online registration.

It also reduces the manual work of the hostel administrator and the bundle of registers that are often searched when looking for information of a student, because through this system you can store the data of students who are leaving in the hostel.

The software is developed using Asp.net, Visual C#, and Microsoft Access 2003 for database design. The study concludes by discussing the findings, and constraints as well as the limitations arising during the course of designing the system and recommends implementation of the system in tertiary institutions.

INTRODUCTION

For the past few years, the number of educational institutions has increased rapidly, thereby the number of hostels is also increasing for the accommodation of the students studying in these institutions.

And hence there is a lot of strain on the people who are running the hostels because for most tertiary institutions the hostel is managed manually, with pen, paper, and files.

Hostel administrators cannot give accurate information of the number and details of students in the hostel and on the occupancy of a particular room, due to the shortfall of the manual system being used.

In this information age, it is appalling to find that most tertiary institutions have not embraced the used of information technology to ease their operations. The internet provides a great opportunity to enhance efficiency in information management.

Hostel Management System being developed is a software developed for managing the information of the hostel. The hostel management system will help hostel management to collect, process, and store hostel information and also help computerize the process of room allocation.

It end the drudgery of manual work students currently staying in the hostel and the information about those ones who had left the hostel three years before.
