Entrepreneurial Skills Needed by Technical College Students for Establishing Radio and Television Small and Medium Scale Enterprise in Kogi State.

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to determine entrepreneurial skills needed by students in radio and television for establishing small and medium scale enterprises. Five research questions guided the study while five null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance.

The study adopted survey research design. The population for the study comprised 32 teachers of radio and television and 44 radio and television technicians.

There was no sampling because of the manageable size of the population. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire. Three experts validated the instrument.

Cronbach alpha reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the instrument and 0.82 reliability coefficient was obtained.

Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data for answering research questions while t-test analysis was used to test the hypotheses of no significant difference at 0.05 level of significance.

The study found that twenty three technical skills, eighteen managerial skills, twenty two financial skills, twenty five marketing skills and twenty one communication skills are needed by radio and television students for establishing small and medium scale enterprise.

The study also found that there was no significant difference in the mean responses of teachers and technicians of radio and television on the technical, managerial, financial, marketing, and communication skills needed by radio and television students for establishing small and medium scale enterprises.

Based on these findings, it was recommended that all the skills identified in this study should be packed and incorporated into radio and television curriculum to train students of technical colleges. It was also recommended that the facilities for effective implementation of the identified skills should be provided by government and employers of technical college graduates.

 INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Technical colleges are the institutions established by government to equip individuals with skills in various occupations. Okoro (2006) stated that technical colleges are regarded as the principal vocational institutions in Nigeria that give full vocational training intended to prepare students for entry into various occupations as artisans and craftsmen.

Alade, Ayodele and Ayodele (2010) described technical colleges as institutions where students are trained to acquire relevant knowledge and skills in different occupations for employment in the world of work. They give full vocational training intended to prepare individuals for entry into various occupations.

Technical colleges are the post primary schools where students are trained to acquire relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes in a chosen occupation or trade at craft level (Bakare, 2012). One of such trades is radio and television.

Radio and Television (RTV) is a trade in technical college that exposes individuals to skills and knowledge on how to diagnose and repair faults in radio and television sets. Radio and television was incorporated in to the curriculum of technical colleges in Nigeria in order to expose students to various skills.

National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) (2004) stated that the goal of radio and television in technical colleges is to produce competent radio and television technicians who can diagnose and carry out repair and maintenance on all kinds of electronic sets.

Federal Government of Nigeria (2004) described Radio and Television as one of the trades taught at the craft and advanced craft levels of technical colleges in Nigeria. The components of this trade include electronic devices, radio communication and television.

Akinsehinde (1991) explained that the teaching of radio and television by teachers in technical colleges serves as a medium through which students learn necessary electronic principles and related practical skills as would enable them develop competencies in diagnosing faults and effecting repairs in radio and television sets as well as similar electronic and telecommunication equipment.
