NECO News Today: The National Examinations Council (also known as NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) and the General Certificate in Education (GCE) in June/July and November/December respectively.

The National Examination Council is an examination body responsible for administering the Senior School Certificates Examinations as well as the General Certificate in Education.

These exams usually take place between the period of June/July and December/January usually after WAEC examinations.

However, NECO came on board during the administration of Adulsalami Abubakar the then head of state of Nigeria in 1999.

Also, NECO was created with the true sole motive to offer subsidized registration of exams to candidates in Nigeria.

This body came on board and took over the responsibilities of the then National Board of Education Measurement (NBEM).  The first Exams conducted by NECO took place in 2000.

1. NECO Forecloses Extension of 2021 SSCE Registration

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has ruled out extending registration for the 2021 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for institution-based candidates.

In a statement, its spokesperson, Azeez Sani, said the exercise, which started March 31, would close on June 25, and “will not be subjected to extension.”

He added that the test would hold on July 5.

The decision not to extend registration, according to Sani, was to allow for efficient and effective planning.

2. Kano to pay NECO Examination Fees for 10,400 Indigent students

The Kano State Government has directed the 44 local governments in the state to pay National Examinations Council (NECO) examination fees for 10, 400 indigent students.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Murtala Sule-Garo, said this through his Public Relations Officer, Farouq Ghali-Masanawa, in a statement on Sunday.

Sule-Garo added that Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje directed each of the eight metropolitan local governments to settle examination fees of 400 less privileged students.

The local governments included Kano Municipal, Dala, Nasarawa, Gwale, Tarauni, Ungogo, Fagge, and Kumbotso.

Sule-Garo said each of the remaining 36 local governments would select 200 less privileged students to pay their examination fees.

He said the government had directed the 44 local governments in the state to set up a committee for the selection process.

The commissioner, however, urged wealthy individuals and non-governmental organizations to join hands with the government to restore the glory of education in the state.

3. Zamfara Expresses Readiness to Reopen Schools

Zamfara state government says it is ready to reopen all its schools shut down some months ago due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The state’s Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed this to newsmen in Gusau on Wednesday.

“I want to assure you that in spite of dwindling resources, our amiable governor, Bello Matawalle, was able to put in place all human and material resources adequate to truncate the spread of the virus in the state.

4. Godswill Obioma’s Resolve to Reposition NECO Not in Doubt

A lawmaker representing Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has hailed the appointment of Prof. Godswill Obioma as Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Examinations Council, NECO.

He said Obioma’s capacity to reposition the examination body for efficiency was never in doubt, especially coming at a time NECO was undergoing several administrative challenges, some of which threatens to undermine its operations.

5. Godswill Obioma Named New NECO Registrar

Ebonyi State Resident Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Godswill Obioma, has been named the new Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Examinations Council, NECO.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved Obioma’s appointment to replace Charles Uwakwe, who, until his sack last Friday by the president, was on suspension running into two years.

6. NECO Registrar, Four Other Management Staff Sacked

President Muhammadu Buhari has terminated the appointment of Prof. Charles Uwakwe as the Registrar/Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council, (NECO).

Similarly, he has dismissed four other Management Staff of the Council for various offenses.

7. NECO to Sanction Schools Charging Above N9,850 for Registration

The National Examinations Council (NECO), has vowed to sanction schools charging above the government-approved fee of N9,850 as registration fee for the 2021 Senior School Certificate Examination.

Dr. Abubakar Gana, Acting Registrar, NECO, said this on Wednesday when the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Services paid an oversight visit to the Council’s liaison office in Abuja.
