Corona Virus Update in Nigeria 2020: Be Careful of COVID-19 Symptoms
Corona Virus Update in Nigeria 2020: Be Careful of COVID-19 Symptoms:
In perilous times like this, panicking might not be your best option but if proper guidance and preventive measures are taken; you might just be able to slow down the transmission of the COVID-19 virus.
Also, we all need to be well informed about the virus symptoms, the disease it causes and how it spreads. All of this has been carefully highlighted below.
COVID-19 (Corona Virus)
Firstly, we need to understand what the Covid-19 is, symptoms, preventive measures and the threats it possesses to mankind.
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses which may cause illness in animals or humans. In humans, several coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The most recently identified coronavirus disease is COVID-19. COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow).
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, many ongoing clinical trials are evaluating potential treatments. So do well to protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face.
Age Range Likely to Get Infected
You should know that nobody’s risk is zero when it comes to the Covid-19 coronavirus. Anybody can get sick in this pandemic. But different people have different risks of getting severe symptoms that require hospitalization or intensive care.
Also, the chances of dying from Covid-19 vary widely across age groups. The conventional wisdom says kids and young people may be fine even if they get infected, with the risk of a case being more severe increasing with age.
It’s the older folks we need to worry about, this thinking says, given death rates reach 20 per cent or more among people 80 and older. To be clear, nobody should feel invulnerable to the coronavirus.
Young people are going to contract the disease, a not-insignificant percentage of them are going to get very sick, and a smaller number will die. The rates of severe and deadly cases might not be nearly as high as the older generations that we are worried about, but the data already shows that age alone does not make you invincible.
Symptoms of COVID-19
The COVID-19 virus affects different people in different ways. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease and most infected people will develop mild to moderate symptoms and recover without requiring special treatment. People who have underlying medical conditions and those over 60 years old have a higher risk of developing severe disease and death.
Common symptoms include:
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Dry cough.
Other symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath
- Aches and pains
- Sore throat
- And very few people will report diarrhoea, nausea or a runny nose.
People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should self-isolate and contact their medical provider or a COVID-19 information line for advice on testing and referral.
People with fever, cough or difficulty breathing should call their doctor and seek medical attention.
Preventive Measures
They are different ways of preventing you from contacting the Coronavirus and slowing the transmission process. Below are the listed preventive measures;
- Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, or clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub (Hand Sanitizer).
- Maintain at least 1-meter distance between you and people coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your face.
- Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Stay home if you feel unwell.
- Refrain from smoking and other activities that weaken the lungs.
- Practice physical distancing by avoiding unnecessary travel and staying away from large groups of people.
Current Countries Affected by COVID-19
The virus is spreading rapidly in many countries worldwide, with more than 261,000 confirmed cases outside China. Of a truth, the main figure for the number of people with coronavirus is thought to be much higher as many of those with milder symptoms have not been tested and counted.

Summary
Lastly, in our fight against the deadly virus, they are still some minor things we should put into consideration.
COVID-19 is mainly spread through droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Therefore, to protect yourself, clean your hands frequently and thoroughly.
Also note, Antibiotics do not work against viruses; they only work on bacterial infections. COVID-19 is caused by a virus, so antibiotics do not work. Antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of COVID-19. They should only be used as directed by a physician to treat a bacterial infection.
