ANM Career Opportunities: The auxiliary nursing midwifery programme prepares students to work as basic health workers. The primary goal of the ANM program is to prepare students for nursing practice in both rural and urban settings.

Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery (ANM) is a certificate-level course in the field of medical nursing. The duration of the ANM course varies from institute to institute.

The course provides knowledge about fields of medicine, healthcare, and providing medical assistant to families, individuals, society and measures necessary for maintaining a good quality of life.

ANM Nursing makes students capable of finding job opportunities in various nursing, midwifery and other related jobs in health organizations. Students can also opt for pursuing higher studies such as B.Sc. Nursing degree.

What is ANM?

ANM stands for Auxiliary Nursing and Midwifery course. It is a 2 years long Diploma program related to the field of nursing.

ANM: What is it About?

Subjects covered within this course’s curriculum include Anatomy & Physiology, Biological Science, Microbiology, Behavioral Science, Sociology, Psychology, Fundamentals of Nursing, and First Aid.

The program aims to produce skilled general nurses, with qualities such as:

ANM: Aim of the Course

The aim of the course is to produce competent ANMs who provide Primary Health Care Services for individuals, families, groups, and communities through various levels of health delivery systems (Sub Health Post, Health Post, Primary Health Care Centre, and District Hospitals) in Nepal.

ANM: Overall Objective

At the end of the course, the ANM graduates will be able to provide basic nursing care, community health care including treatment of simple disorder and care of children.

Also, an examination of pregnant women, conducting normal deliveries, care of postnatal mothers and newborn babies either in-home or in health institutions.

Nursing is an integral part of the healthcare sector. Nurses play a crucial role in the smooth functioning of different types of health organizations (hospitals, dispensaries, NGOs, etc).

Nursing is the discipline that focuses on care, rehabilitation or treatment of patients. The primary objectives of the above actions are:

Prevention of diseases, rehabilitation, and maintaining good health of patients and/or the general public.

This doesn’t mean that ANM Diploma holders can only work in a rural setup. They may work in urban setup also!

ANM is a job-oriented course, using which, 12th standard passed students may enter the field of nursing. Let us check out the course details now.

ANM: Course Details

It is a Diploma course, commonly just known as the ANM course. Duration: The course is 2 years long (1½ years with some institutes).

Generally, the first academic phase is yearlong. The second academic phase is 6 months long. 6 months are dedicated to the internship.

After completing this course, successful candidates may register themselves as registered nurses or midwives with the state nurse registration council.

ANM: Eligibility Criteria

Age limit: A candidate must be at least 17 years of age. Candidate must not be more than 35 years of age.

Educational Qualifications: According to the website of the Indian Nursing Council, 10+2 Science and Arts stream passed students are the most preferred ones (please read the next paragraph also).

Minimum aggregate marks required may vary from one institute to another. Usually, it is around 40-50% marks.

Nota Bene: It has been noticed that the educational requirement varies from one institute to another. In the case of many institutes offering ANM courses, the minimum educational requirement is- 10+2 passed in any stream (Science/Commerce/Arts)!

So, before taking admission, enquire at the institute and make sure whether or not you are eligible for admission!

ANM: Admission Process

Most institutes follow the ‘direct admission’ process. Seats are allotted to deserving applicants based on the marks scored by them in the 10+2 board examination.

In the case of some reputed institutes, private screening tests and interviews are also used in the admission process.

ANM is a job-oriented course. Still, it is just a Diploma program. There’s a much more valuable GNM and Degree Nursing program out there. Completing the GNM & Degree program will further boost one’s career prospects!

After completing the ANM course and getting registered with a State Nurse Registration Council, one may pursue GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) course. On completion of GNM, one may go for B.Sc. Nursing (Post Basic).

This course will lead to a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. The course duration is 2 years (3 years with distance education mode).

After completing B.Sc. Nursing (Post Basic) course, one may go for even advanced PG programs. Some of the well-known advanced PG courses are-

Salary: For freshers, the starting salary is around the region of 10-12k Rupees per month. This figure will rise gradually, along with work experience.

Nursing Midwifery Salient Features

Certification

The Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training will award the Technical School Leaving Certificate in “Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery” to the candidate who successfully completes the requirements as prescribed by the curriculum.

Grading System

The grading system will be as follows:

Grading overall marks

1. Distinction 80% or above

2. First division 75% to below 80%

3. Second division 65% to below 75%

4. Third division Pass aggregate to below 65%

Pattern of Attendance

Every student must have a minimum of 80% attendance in theory and 90% attendance in practical to appear in the internal and final examination.
