Bachelor of Commerce offers to understand in Accounting, Economics, Business Law, Taxation, Insurance, and Management.

The Bachelor of Commerce (B.com) degree was first offered at the University of Birmingham. In India, the duration of B.com is 3 years. Candidates can pursue B.com in regular and distance mode.

What is B.Com?

B. Com or Bachelor of Commerce is a three-year undergraduate course imparted in regular as well as distance education mode. BCom is the second most popular undergraduate course in the Commerce branch.

Under BCom, there are three most popular courses, namely BCom or BCom-General, BCom (Honours) and BCom LLB. The BCom or BCom-General is also referred to as BCom-Pass by many universities.

In the BCom course, candidates are taught core subjects related to commerce and finance. In the three-year duration, the candidates are given options to choose from a few elective subjects too.

The program is usually spread over six semesters during which the student is taught topics like financial accounting, corporate tax, economics, company law, auditing, business management, etc.

B.Com is the best option for students who want to make a career in commerce, accounting, finance, banking, and insurance. BCom is also ideal for those who wish to pursue Chartered Accountancy, Cost Accounting, and Company Secretaryship.

After completing BCom, students can also pursue a career in management, teaching, advertising, law, journalism, mass communication, law, design, etc. The average starting salary of a BCom graduate is Rs 3 lakh and upwards.

Difference between B.Com and B.Com (Hons)

Both are the undergraduate courses in the field of commerce. The level of study of B.Com (Hons) is higher than the regular B.Com. B.Com honors include specialized subjects whereas B.Com. The regular course has general subjects. The subjects in B.com (Hons.) are in detail as compared to regular B.com.

Specialization Course in B.com – Bachelor of Commerce

Following are the available specialization courses in B.com

  1. B.Com. – Advertising & Sales Management: In this program students are taught about the important aspects of Advertising and Sales Management. It is beneficial for students who want to work in the marketing and advertising industry.
  2. B.Com. – Computer Application: In this program, students are taught about a computer application, software development, and operating procedures, along with regular commerce subjects like accounts, economics, statistics, etc.
  3. B.Com. – Foreign Trade: In this program, students are taught about foreign trade procedures and transactions, along with regular B. Com. Subjects. It is beneficial for students who want to work in a company involved in import and /or export activities.
  4. B.Com. – E-Commerce: In this program, students are taught to effectively manage e-commerce businesses like online shops, or business portals along with technical and legal issues associated with it. It is beneficial for those students who have a knack for Commerce in the Electronic form.
  5. B.Com. – Honors: B. Com (H) is an extensive form of General or Pass Course B. Com. Many colleges run these courses in semester systems like in Engineering, MBA or other courses. Students are taught all the subjects in a more detailed form than they are covered in normal B. Com. Besides students are allowed to choose one subject for specialization in their final year. For example, one can opt for a specialization in Accounts, Cost Account, Management, Computer, Economics or any other subject.
  6. B.Com – Office Management: In this program students are taught about computer applications, office administration, communication skills, work ethics, and corporate culture. It is beneficial for those students who are interested in managing an office.
  7. B.Com – Tax Procedure: In this program, students are taught tax procedures and essentials, along with other commercial subjects. It is beneficial for students who want to work in Accounts or Tax department of any company or those who want to start their tax consultancy firm.

Those candidates who are unable to clear it in 3 years can clear it in a certain number of years depending upon the education policy of an institute. Most of the Institutes offer change of Elective Subjects in the 2nd year depending upon one’s performance or choice.

Certain Institutes admit students who have passed the 1st or 2nd year from another institute depending upon fulfillment of the institute’s rules and regulations. Bachelor of Commerce is considered as the second most preferred option for those who are not able to get admission in Science and those who think that Arts Degree is a lesser cousin of a Commerce Course.

B.Com Eligibility Criteria:

Unlike technical and vocational courses, BCom is offered by almost all the universities and colleges in India in regular as well as distance education mode. Eligibility criteria for B. Com course:

  • The candidate must have studied Commerce in class 11 and 12 with Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Maths/optional subject and English as main subjects
  • The candidate must meet the minimum cut-off criteria for admission to the college applied to
  • The minimum cut off marks criteria may be different in each college/university’s as it is subject to the college/university’s admission criteria for that year

Factors influencing the minimum cut off marks for B(Com) admission are a total percentage of candidates passing in Commerce inboards, the highest score in Commerce, the average score in Commerce, minimum cut off marks of the previous year, etc.

Admission:

Generally, students are admitted to B.Com based on merit. The merit is prepared based on the candidate’s performance in the higher secondary examination. Some Universities also conduct the entrance test for admitting students. Besides the candidate’s academic knowledge, some colleges conduct an interview.

Candidates who wish to pursue an MBA after the completion of B.Com have to appear the entrance test namely Common Admission Test (CAT), Management Aptitude Test (MAT), etc. Some institutions also organize their entrance exam for giving admission to their colleges.
