– Differences Between PST and PDT –

Difference between PST and PDT: Probably, the most significant difference between Pacific Standard Time (PST) and Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) is an hour.

Both PDT and PST are time zones used in the Pacific Time (PT) zone, which is seen in one part of the North American continent.

North America is relatively large and because of the enormous landmass, Pacific Time (PT) zone isn’t sufficient enough to be the only time reference. As a result, PDT and PST were introduced. PDT and PST are expressed by referring to GMT or UTC.

Facts About PST and PDT

There are more than 25 world time zones which range from -12 GMT to 0 GMT and +12 GMT. They are measured 15 degrees of the prime meridian at the Greenwich Observatory in Greenwich, England.

Some of the time zones are European Central Time (ECT), Eastern African time (EAT), Australia Central Time (ACT), Mountain Standard Time (MST), Central Standard Time (CST), Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), and Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The United States of America and Canada uses the Pacific Time Zone or PT. It is based on the 120th meridian west of the Greenwich Observatory. It is called the Pacific Standard Time (PST) in winter and the Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) in summer.

Pacific Standard Time (PST)

Pacific Standard Time (PST) is 8 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time zone is a standard time zone and is used in North America. This time zone is often called Pacific Time.

It is also being used in the Canadian province of British Columbia except for Cranbrook, Golden, and Invermere. It is also used in the Yukon. The Mexican state of Baja, California also uses PST in winter.

Pacific Daylight Time (PDT)

Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) is 7 hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This time zone is a Daylight Saving Time and is used in North America.

The Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) is used in summer. Time is moved an hour forward of the typical time during summer to use the more drawn-out long stretches of summer and help save energy simultaneously.

It starts on the second Sunday of March each year. It ends on the first week of November each year when time is again moved back by one hour. This is done because winter has shorter daylight time.

Notable Distinctions Between PST and PDT

1. Pacific Standard Time is the time zone that is used in the United States of America, Canada, and several other countries during the winter while Pacific Daylight Time is used by these places during the summer.

2. An email sent from someone in the Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) time zone will have the time zone listed as “-0700” in the headers of the email. An email sent from someone in the Pacific Standard Time (PST) time zone will have the time zone listed as “-0800” in the headers of the email.

3. PST is eight hours behind the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-8).

4. When using PDT, time is moved one hour ahead while it is moved one hour behind back to its original time when PST is again used.

5. Only some locations are currently on PST because most places in this time zone are currently on summer time/daylight saving time and are observing PDT.

6. PDT is used to make use of the longer time of day during the summer in order to help conserve energy while PST is used during the winter which has shorter days than summer.

7. Both PST and PDT are used in places that observe Pacific Time (PT).
