– Difference Between Schooling And Learning –

In the eyes of most people these two ideas are one and the same since it is widely believed that learning happens at school. That’s not exactly true there are a whole lot of differences between the process of school and that of learning and this article does a great job at differentiating both concepts.

10 Key Differences Between Schooling And Learning

Learning is basically the human activity that least needs manipulation by others. Most learning is not the result of instruction. It is rather the result of unhampered participation in a meaningful setting.

The term ‘learning’ basically refers to the cognitive process of acquiring new skills or knowledge. Schooling simply refers to what happens while attending educational institutions – elementary through to graduate school or the equivalent, i.e. receiving instruction at home.

The Concept of Schooling

In his 1971, book, Deschooling Society, Ivan Illich makes a powerful case against Schools. “School” is thought of as something that is indispensable. We have raised generations of people to believe that without schools and a conventional education society will collapse.

Illich argues that universal, obligatory schooling is not entirely devoid of learning; people do learn to respect authority, trust institutions, and be suspicious of those that lack their same credentials.

Pupils are “schooled’ to confuse teaching with learning, grade advancement with education, a diploma with competence, and fluency with the ability to say something new.

His imagination is “schooled” to accept service in place of value. Medical treatment is mistaken for health care, social work for the improvement of community life, police protection for safety, military poise for national security, the rat race for productive work.”

We have been indoctrinated to believe the notion that only schools can offer education and that skills and knowledge acquisition are only reliable if it is done formally in a traditional school.

In the words of Ken Robinson, “Schools kill creativity.” And in the words of Ivan Illich, “Schools pervert the natural inclination to learn.”

The concept of Learning

Learning is a natural process that is self-motivated by the learner and includes the search for fresh ideas, new information, new challenges, and meanings while gaining experiences. True learning is harder to measure and assess.

Generally, learning happens at different paces contingent on the subject matter and whether the learner is interested. Learning cannot be turned on and off. The students are either learning or they are not. Learning is a lifelong process. However, education and schooling are temporary.

Our individual learning capacity varies considerably and will depend not only on ability but also on motivation, personality, learning style, and an awareness of our own learning processes.
