Difference Between Values and Beliefs: Values refer to a set of ideas that detects an individual on how to evaluate right versus wrong, whereas beliefs refer to a set of doctrines, statements or experiences a person holds as true, usually with evidence or proof.

Difference Between Values and Beliefs

Both values and beliefs have far-reaching effects on an individual’s way of life as well as collectively affect his/her attitudes, perceptions, personality, character, and behavior.

What are Values?

Values usually refer to an abstract rule that can be applied to many experiences. It can also be applied as per personal choice in numerous situations. Values can also be defined as a moral choice an individual uses consistently in many situations.

However, it can be used to know a person’s sense of right or wrong, or what should be done in certain situations. Values can influence one’s behavior and attitudes. “Peace, justice, and equality for all,” or “Time is gold,” are examples of values people may follow.

Values can differ from person to person, or, taking a wider perspective, they can differ for people across all cultures. They are a basic foundation of one’s humanity, attitudes, and how one views everything that surrounds him/her. Decisions are often made based on values.

What are beliefs?

Simply, a belief is an idea that a person holds as being true. Beliefs are the opinions that we generally hold to be true without necessarily any proof or evidence.

What are beliefs?

They are often, but not always connected to religion. Religious beliefs could include a belief that God created the earth in seven days, or that Jesus was the son of God.

Religions other than Christianity also have their own set of beliefs. Non-religious beliefs could include: that all people are created equal, which would guide us to treat everyone regardless of sex, race, religion, age, education, status, etc. with equal respect.

Beliefs are basically assumptions that we make about the world and our values stem from those beliefs. A belief can come from different sources, including:

  • A person’s own experiences or experiments
  • The acceptance of cultural and societal norms (e.g. religion)
  • What other people say (e.g. education or mentoring).
