First Year Applicant Requirements

First Year Applicant Requirements

To be a first-year applicant means you’re a freshman. And to be a freshman means that you are currently in high school (with or without any completed college classes) or you are a high school graduate who has not attended any college after high school, prior to entering Cal Poly.

FSU picks the brightest students from Florida and around the world to join their institution each academic year. To be among these few, you have to follow the process below.

How to Apply

In addition to the FSU acceptance rate, Florida State makes it easy for students to apply by giving them several options. You may apply through Common App, the FSU Application, or the  Coalition Application.

It’s important to remember that students should only submit one application for admission. Florida State does not have a preference as to which application is submitted.

To apply for the University Honors Program, students should select Yes to the question “Are you interested in applying to the University Honors Program?” on the admissions application.

By selecting Yes, a separate Honors supplemental application will appear on the Application Status Check. For detailed instructions on how to complete your supplemental Honors Application, visit the Honors website. To be considered for the University Honors Program, you must complete the Honors Application by December 6, 2020.

If you plan to major in dance, film (animation or production), music, studio art, or theatre, contact the academic department directly for specific major requirements.

Step By Step Application Process

  1. Self-report all ACT and/or SAT scores.
  2. Link your SSAR by copying the 32-character code from your SSAR account.

ACT/SAT Information

FSU, along with Florida’s 11 other public universities, is subject to Florida Board of Governors admissions regulation 6.002 which requires first year students seeking admission to submit an ACT or SAT test score.

All first year applicants are required to submit at least one ACT and/or SAT test score. Florida State does not require the optional ACT writing score or the optional SAT essay.

FSU allows students to self-report their SAT and/or ACT scores through the Application Status Page.

Since accuracy is critical, students must have a copy of their SAT/ACT score report(s) available to reference when self-reporting their scores. If admitted, students will be required to submit official score reports prior to enrollment at FSU.

Essay & Resume Requirement

As I said earlier the essay and resume are not required but highly recommended, because they provide another opportunity for FSU to learn more about you. The essay should be no longer than 650 words, and may be uploaded after the student’s application has been received.¬†Applicants should choose one topic from the list provided.

¬†Please note that The Common Application provides different essay prompts than the FSU and The Coalition applications. The resume should be no longer than two pages, and maybe uploaded after the student’s application has been received.
