How Does Masterclass Work?
We’re going to take a stab in the dark and guess that you are familiar with Masterclass. Even if it’s just by name or those simple, but striking adverts that pop up before you get to watch whatever you are searching for on YouTube. You know the ones where an exceptionally impressive leader of their fields like Samuel L Jackson, Tom Morello, Martin Scorsese, and Neil Gaiman.
But it may be that is all you know about it. Perhaps you have even stopped short of finding out anymore because you think it seems too good to be true.
If you still are interested in it and wondering how it works, that’s what we are going to discuss in the following post.
Before we look at what it involves, let’s just outline what Masterclass is, for anyone who has never heard of it.
What is It?
Founded and offered by a company based in San Francisco, Masterclass is a digital learning platform primarily directed at creative professionals. As it’s digital, like many other distance learning courses, you can work through it at your own pace through any device with an internet connection, whether you prefer to use your phone, tablet, or computer.
Each course includes content put together by the guest lecturer, including several videos.
What Can You Learn?
As you can probably imagine from the shortlist of famous names who are leaders in their craft that take on teaching duties through Masterclass, there is a wide variety of different subjects you can learn. Some of the most popular and noteworthy includes:
- Directing with Ron Howard
- Screenwriting by Aaron Sorkin
- Filmmaking with Martin Scorsese
- Comedy with Steve Martin
- Writing thrillers with James Patterson
- Cooking with Gordon Ramsay
There are far too many to mention here, but the above at least gives you a flavor of what’s on offer.

How it Actually Works
With most Masterclass courses, you are provided with at least 25 video lessons, each of which is between 5 and 30 minutes long. The vast majority tend to be 10 minutes in length.
Depending on the subject matter and the teacher, the videos are presented in different manners. With some, they speak directly to the camera, whereas with others, the teacher shows you how they work with their own students’ efforts. You will also find that some video lessons also feature extracts and excerpts of the teacher’s work.
As we noted before, you can work through the lessons at your own pace, on the device you want. In addition to the videos, the Masterclass lessons come with recommended reading lists, downloadable worksheets, and background material.
The workbook that accompanies each lesson is particularly useful as it helps to summarize what is discussed in the video. Of course, you can rewind, pause, and slow down or speed up the videos as many times as you need to. In the workbook, there are also additional reading materials and there are spaces for you to make notes on the lessons.
Two Great Enrolling Options
One of the great things about Masterclass is the fact that you can either pay for just a single Masterclass or pay an annual fee for access to all the Masterclasses. The annual option definitely worth it because many different classes can be grouped together and used to give you a more comprehensive and detailed look at the subject from many different angles.
