Requirements for Early Childhood Education Certification.

Early Childhood Education Certification: Early Childhood Education is a branch of education that deals with teaching young students of age 3-8 formally or informally.

Requirements for Early Childhood Education Certification

An early childhood education certification proves that the teachers have met a standard that shows they are capable of educating young students of age 3-8.

There are six (6) types of Early Childhood Education Certification, they are:

    1. Infant-toddler Teacher
    2. Infant-toddler Lead Teacher
    3. Preschool Teacher
    4. Preschool Lead Teacher
    5. Director 1
    6. Director 2

Requirements for Infant-Toddler Teacher

  1. Candidate must be 21years of age.
  2. Must possess high school diploma.
  3. Must have completed a 3-credit college course in Child Growth and Development.

If you don’t have the above requirements, you can substitute with:

  1. A 2-year approved high school child care program.
  2. A letter of recommendation from the director of the high school program.
  3. A copy of your high school diploma and transcript.

Work Experience

  1. Must have at least 9 months of supervised experience.

If you don’t have work experience, you can substitute with:

Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, or

  1. A bachelor’s degree in early childhood or related field (counts as 6 months work experience).
  2. A bachelor’s degree in another field (counts as 3 months work experience).
  3. One Continuing Education Unit in Infant and Toddler Development or Care from a Child Care Education Institution.

Requirements for Infant-Toddler Lead Teacher Or Preschool Lead Teacher

  1. Must have 3 college credits in Child Growth and Development.
  2. Must have 3 college credits in infant-toddler care and education and early childhood curriculum for infant-toddler and preschool lead teacher respectively.
  3. Must have 6 college credits in early childhood education.

If you don’t have the above requirements, you can substitute with:

Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, or

  1. Four (4) Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
  2. An original certificate and transcript that shows completion of Child Growth and Development courses.

Work Experience

This is dependent on your degree;

  1. 36 months of experience for a high school diploma.
  2. 27 months of experience for a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
  3. 18 months of experience for an associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
  4. 27 months of experience for an associate degree in another field.
  5. 9 months of experience for a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.

If you don’t have work experience, you can substitute with:

Student teaching also referred to as a practicum.

Requirements for Director 1

You must meet all requirements for a Lead Teacher and:

  1. A 2 college credits or 3 CEUs in Child Care Administration.
  2. A 2 college credits or CEUs in Early Childhood Education.

Work Experience

You must have 6 months of experience as a Lead Teacher.

Requirements for Director 2

You must meet all requirements for Director 1 and:

  1. A 2 college credits or 3 CEUs in administration topics
