Applications are invited for Rijksmuseum Fellowship Programme to highly talented candidates to base part of their research at the Rijksmuseum for the year 2019. The Rijksmuseum Fellowship Programme is open to candidates of all nationalities.

The purpose of the Rijkmuseum Fellowship Programme is to encourage and support scholarly investigation, and to contribute to academic discourses while strengthening bonds between the museum and universities.

The Rijksmuseum is the museum of the Netherlands. In 2013, an entirely renovated Rijksmuseum opened its doors to the public. They are greeted by a stunning building, amazing interior design, wonderful exhibitions, lively events, and many fine amenities for young and old.

Scholarship Description

  • Course Level: The Rijksmuseum Fellowship Programme is open to the new generation of museum professionals.
  • Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded to study following subjects:
  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation enables PhD candidates in the History of Art to base part of their research at the Rijksmuseum.
  • The Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Fund/Rijksmuseum Fund enables History of Art PhD candidates from the University of Pennsylvania to conduct dissertation research at the Rijksmuseum.
  • The Johan Huizinga Fund/Rijksmuseum Fund offers outstanding candidates the opportunity to conduct historical research into objects in the Rijksmuseum collection.
  • The Migelien Gerritzen Fund/Rijksmuseum Fund enables candidates to conduct conservation or scientific research on artworks and historical artefacts.
  • Scholarship Award: Fellowship stipends are awarded to help support a Fellow’s study and research efforts during the tenure of their appointment. The stipend amount varies by funding source and Fellowship period.
  • Nationality: The Rijksmuseum Fellowship Programme is open to candidates of all nationalities.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

The Rijksmuseum Fellowship Programme is open to candidates of all nationalities and with varied specialisms. They may include art historians, curators, conservators, historians and scientists. Candidates should have proven research capabilities, academic credentials and excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language (ideally Dutch or German) is preferred but not required. Fellowships will be awarded for a duration ranging from 3-12 months, starting in the academic year 2019-2020.

The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for art historical research

  • The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship supports individuals engaged in postgraduate university studies leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science (DSc) degree, whose research is compatible with the Fellowship position. The candidate has to have a university-affiliated supervisor.
  • Fellowships are open to candidates of all nationalities and with varied specialisms. They may include researchers specialising in the fields of art history, cultural history or related studies.
  • Candidates should have proven research capabilities, academic credentials and excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language (ideally Dutch or German) is preferred but not required.

The Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Fellowship for art historical research

  • The Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Fellowship supports individuals engaged in postgraduate university studies leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Doctor of Science (DSc) degree, whose research is compatible with the Fellowship position. The candidate has to have a university-affiliated supervisor.
  • The only History of Art PhD candidates from the University of Pennsylvania is eligible to apply.
  • Candidates should have proven research capabilities, academic credentials and excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language (ideally Dutch or German) is preferred but not required.

The Johan Huizinga Fellowship for historical research

  • The Johan Huizinga Fellowship is open to MA graduates, as well as PhD students and post-doctoral candidates.
  • Fellowships are open to candidates of all nationalities and with varied specialisms. They may include researchers specialising in the fields of history, art history and related cultural-historical studies.
  • Candidates should have proven research capabilities, academic credentials and excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language (ideally Dutch or German) is preferred but not required.

The Migelien Gerritzen Fellowship for conservation and scientific research

  • The Migelien Gerritzen Fellowship is open to MA graduates, as well as PhD students and post-doctoral candidates.
  • Fellowships are open to candidates of all nationalities and with varied specialisms. They may include researchers specialising in the field of the conservation sciences or related studies.
  • Candidates should have proven research capabilities, academic credentials and excellent command of the English language – both written and spoken. Proficiency in a second language (ideally Dutch or German) is preferred but not required.

No applications will be accepted after the deadline. All applications must be submitted online and in English. Selection will be made by an international committee in February 2019. The committee consists of eminent scholars in the relevant fields of study from European universities and institutions, and members of the curatorial staff of the Rijksmuseum. Applicants will be notified by 15 March 2019. All Fellowships will start in September 2019.
