Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation African scholars

Wow! This is is unbelievable!! Every two years the foundation hosts the Young African Scholars program.

Ten scholars whose proposed projects are judged to be of high quality and closely relevant to the foundation’s interest in violence and aggression are selected to take part.

The program includes a methods workshop, fieldwork research grants of $2,000 USD each, editorial and publication assistance, and sponsorship at an international conference to present research findings.

The Young African Scholars Program

The Foundation welcomes proposals for the African Fellow Awards from any of the social and natural sciences or allied disciplines that promise to increase understanding of the causes, and control of violence.

Highest priority is given to research that can increase understanding and amelioration of urgent problems of violence and aggression in the modern world.

The proposed project must relate directly to the African continent.

Scholars Program Eligibility

  • Applicant must be aged 40 or younger
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at an African higher education institution, and living on the continent.

How to Apply for The Scholar Program

Applications should be no more than ten pages in length and include the following:

  • Research question
  • Short literature review
  • Description of research methods to be used
  • Reference letter from official academic advisor
  • Two-page C.V.
  • Copy of passport or government-issued ID card


Due to current travel restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation has postponed the application cycle for the 2021-2022 cohort of African Fellows. Updated application information will be released later in 2021.
