The Wellcome Sanger Institute Prize competition is a way to reward students for being outstanding. As you read through, we will be showing what it takes to get the prize and also guide you on what is needed and what needs to be done.

Wellcome Sanger Institute Prize Competition

Undergraduate students from low and middle-income nations can compete for the Sanger Institute Prize, which gives the winner access to the most advanced genomic research.

A three-month internship with a research group at the Wellcome Sanger Institute will be extended to the Sanger Institute Prize recipient. The grant covers living, travel, and research expenses.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

1. Be from a low- or middle-income country (a full list of eligible countries)

2. Be studying at a University/Institute in a low-/middle-income country

3. Demonstrate an active interest in research in the genomics field

4. Have a good command of English

How to Enter the Sanger Institute Prize Competition

Stage One: Expression of Interest

In order to proceed to the first step of the application process, candidates must fill out a brief form and submit an expression of interest outlining their scientific interests and motivation for attending the Sanger Institute. At this point, two scholarly references are also necessary.

Stage Two: Essay

1. Selected candidates will then be asked to take part in stage two of the process, which is to write an essay with a given title.

2. The judges’ decision will be final and no further correspondence will be entered into.

Only applications made via the online application system will be accepted. Entries should be submitted online by 5pm UK GMT, 2nd January 2024.
