Studying Medical Laboratory Science As A Course In Any Nigerian Higher Institutions

Medical Laboratory Science as a course is offered in many Nigerian Universities leading to the award of B.Sc. It’s in the Faculty of Allied Medical sciences depending on school’s categorization.

Any students who successfully completed his or her studies in Medical Laboratory Science will eventually become a Medical Lab Scientist with a qualification level of undergraduate.

Qualification Level: Undergraduate Degree

Course Duration of Medical Laboratory Science

The course duration is 5 years for UTME Students and 4 years for Direct Entry Students starting from level 200 (year two).

Admission Requirements for Medical Laboratory Science

Candidates who made the basic admission requirements are offered admission into 4 or 5 years programme deepening on Mode of entry (UTME or DE).

Although, admission requirements slightly differ in many schools, here are the basic admission as well as waiver considerations.

UTME  Requirements for Medical Laboratory Science

Candidates who wish to gain admission for this programme at any University in Nigeria must have at least Five (5) SSCE (WAEC/NECO) credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some schools accepts a combination of O’Level Results to admission consideration.

JAMB-UTME Subject Combination of Medical Laboratory Science

The JAMB UTME Subject combination for this course are Use of English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Special Admission Considerations for JAMB UTME Candidates

(i) CALABAR – same as in Medicine and Surgery.

(ii) AAU accepts B.Sc Degree in relevant fields with good grade. Remedial results   not acceptable.

(iii) IBADAN accepts five SSCE/GCE credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one sitting

Direct Entry Requirements

Candidates who wish to gain admission into Medical Laboratory Science  programme at any of the Universities in Nigeria at direct entry level must have;‘A’ level passes   to include Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Zoology

Special Admission Considerations for Direct Entry Candidates

(i) CALABAR accepts ‘A’ level in any two of Chemistry, Biology and Physics, B.SC in Biological Science; AIMLT or FIMLT with O/L requirements.

(ii) MAIDUGURI and IMSU accepts certificate of   Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology   Science/Technology (IMLS/T) of Nigeria   plus ‘O’ level requirements.

(iv)    UNIZIK accepts HND/B.SC in Biological Sciences or related fields.

(v) BENIN – Same as in Medical Biochemistry. Accepts degree holders in related Science fields.

(vi) MAIDUGURI accepts Zoology in lieu of Biology.

(vii)  JOS accepts First Degree in relevant Biological Science  discipline with at least a Second Class Lower Division

(viii)   EBSU accepts AIMLS or its equivalent plus relevant UTME ‘O’ level requirements

(ix)     UNN accepts:
(a)    B.Sc in relevant courses with at least 2nd class lower Div. Plus O’ level credit in English Language, Mathematics. Biology, Chemistry and Physics in not more than 2 sittings.

(b)   OND in related courses with an upper credit plus O’ level entry requirement as above.
(c)   Advanced level cert in Chemistry, Physics, Biology at credit level or any upper equivalent certificate in addition two  relevant  O’ level qualification

(d) UNN requires candidates with AIMLS Professional plus O’ level entry requirement.

(x) LAUTECH accepts ‘A’ Level Passes  in Chemistry, and Biology with UTME requirements OR ND with Upper Credit /HND or First Degree in relevant discipline. (plus UTME requirements) may be considered.

(xi)    NDU requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

(x) IBADAN accepts A’ level passes to include Physics, Chemistry and Biology B.Sc. or HND in relevant fields; AIMLT or FIMLT with O/L requirements.

(xi) BAYERO accepts Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science
from a recognized institution
