10. Amaka – 2Baba featuring Peruzzi.

“I like woman I dey straight forward!” 2Baba’s opener in the song Amaka has been regarded as the best intro to a Nigerian song in 2018. It captures everything that has to do with social media dating. The frustrations of finding love, the deceit, the disappointments and more that men go through when accosting women on social media. It is not surprising that this song is popular, especially among the male folk because it is very relatable.

9. Bobo-  Mayorkun ft Davido

Jogodo is a remark of the early 2000’s hit song of the same name by Danfo Drivers and it was well received by music lovers world over.

4. Issa Goal- Olamide featuring Small Doctor, Naira Marley

Issa goal! This is now a street anthem especially during football matches. This song which especially trended during the recently concluded Russia 2018 FIFA Senior Men’s World Cup has come to stay. Accompanied with the now popular shaku shaku dance steps, this song has gone viral and would continue to stay so. It is one of the top 10 most downloaded Nigerian songs in 2018.

3. This is Nigeria – FalztheBadhGuy

FalztheBahdGuy’s “This is Nigeria” which is a cover of America Musician Childish Gambino’s “This is America” became an instant hit immediately it was released in June. It reached 1 million views in on the first week it was released and was accompanied by controversy. This is Nigeria treated topical Nigerian issues such as bribery and corruption, religious fanaticism and hypocrisy, police brutality and cyber crimes so much more.

Falz was praised for daring to address issues which most Nigerian musicians shy away from.  The video for This is Nigeria made the song trend even more as the visuals depicted explicitly the issues plaguing the Nigerian society. Falz was even threatened with a court order by a religious group which his team promptly responded to but nothing came of it.

The song has been regarded as the most socially conscious song in 2018 and in recent years by a Nigerian musician.

2. Assurance – Davido

Davido’s Assurance which is like a ballad to celebrate his girlfriend  is a major hit. It is almost like Davido has got a magic wand. Immediately the DMW label boss dropped the song it became a top trending song with the video reaching hundreds of thousands of view in a few weeks and has surpassed the 1 million mark ever since. It is played at parties and weddings and even birthday parties and any event you can think of where secular music is played.

The song trended even more when Davido bought a 45 million naira car for his girlfriend as a celebration of their love and it trended for weeks on Twitter.

1. Soco – Wizkid featuring Terri, Ceeza Mill, Soco

Wizkid is arguably Nigeria’s top musician based on the number of international hit songs, collaborations, awards and shows he has had so far.

Soco which is a fussion of Afrobeats with Dancehall music is a groovy tune. Laced with Wizkid’s unique voice and accompanied by catchy beats and lyrics which are easy to listen to and remember, Soco is a song which entices you to dance right from the beginning to the end and would have you playing it on repeat and favourite on your playlist.

No party or musical fest in Nigeria is complete without the DJ playing Soco at least 3 times or even more. Even with many months since this song was released, it is still catchy to listen to it. I was even been listening to it before I started writing this piece. Lovely song it sure is.

Conclusion.

This list of top 10  best Nigeria most downloaded songs in 2018 could change at any time before the year ends. For many reasons some of the lower ranked downloaded songs would outrank the top downloaded songs and vice versa over the cause of the year.

For example, as stated above, Olamide’s Issa Goal featuring Small Doctor, Lil Kesh and Naira Marley was an averagely performing song but it witnessed an upsurge during the recently concluded Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup especially after the Super Eagles of Nigeria’s player Ahmed Musa scored two goal against Iceland Men Football National team. It is our hope that Nigerian songs would continuously to witness more acceptance and recognition world over.
