This information is especially for all candidates preparing for the 2021 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

JAMB has released the recommended novel to be read by all candidates that will participate in the 2021 exam. Read a bit about the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) before you see its recommended novel for 2021.

About Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions.

The board conducts the entrance Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities.

The board is also charged with the responsibility to administer similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics, and colleges of educations.

All of these candidates must have obtained the West Africa School Certificate, now West African Examinations Council, WAEC, or its equivalent, National Examination Council (Nigeria), NECO.

JAMB’s Mandate

The legal instrument establishing the Board was promulgated by the Act (No. 2 of 1978) of the Federal Military Government on 13th February 1978. By August 1988, the Federal Executive Council amended Decree No. 2 of 1978.

The amendments have since been codified into Decree No. 33 of 1989, which took effect from 7th December 1989. Decree No. 2 of 1978 (amended by Decree No. 33 of 1989) empowered the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board to:

(a) Conduct Matriculation Examination for entry into all Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (by whatever name called) in Nigeria

(b) Appoint Examiners, Moderators, Invigilators, members of the Subject Panels and committees and other persons with respect to matriculation examinations and any other matters incidental thereto or connected therewith.

(c) Place suitably qualified candidates in the tertiary institutions after having taken into account:

  • The vacancies available in each tertiary institution
  • The guidelines approved for each tertiary institution by its proprietors or other competent authorities
  • The preference expressed or otherwise indicated by the candidates for certain tertiary institutions and courses
  • And other matters as the Board may be directed by the Honorable Minister to consider or the Board itself may consider appropriate in the circumstances.

(d) Collate and disseminate information on all matters relating to admissions into tertiary institutions or any other matter relevant to the discharge of functions of the board.

(e) Carry out other activities as are necessary or expedient for the full discharge of all or any of the functions conferred on it under or pursuant to this Decree.

JAMB Recommended Novel 2021

The novel recommended to be read by all the candidates participating in the 2021 JAMB UTME irrespective of their course of study is: “The Life Changer” by Khadija Abubakar Jalli.

Since JAMB introduced the use of novels in the Use of English exams, questions have been set from the compulsory novels. You may be asking, how many questions do they set from the recommended novels?

This means that you basically want to know what JAMB Novel you will require summary questions and answers for practice purposes.

Usually, 15 to 35 questions from the compulsory novel (s) are set each year. To be truthful with you, they should really be bonus marks for you as an aspirant.

It should boost your JAMB score and increase your chances of gaining entrance into your school of choice for the academic year.

NOTE: The book will be sold at an additional cost of N500.00 (five hundred naira).

Which Novel is JAMB Using for the 2021 Exam?

JAMB has stated in their instructions that candidates will be tested on any of this novel in JAMB Use of English. Meaning that JAMB may decide to pick any novel as the recommended compulsory novel for 2021. Including the ones used last year.

The use of English is compulsory for all candidates, irrespective of your course or subject combination.

Well, it is important to be abreast with the JAMB Novel of the immediate past year. JAMB is known to repeat novels after three years but this year, it changed the novel to “The Life Changer” by Khadija Abubakar Jalli for 2021/2022 Use of English Examination.

As I said, Jamb uses Novel two or three times before thinking of Introducing a new one. The Life Changer has been introduced this 2021 for the Use of English exams.

A number of questions will come out from the novel. Trust me, The Life Changer will carry a whole lot of marks. You won’t be happy with yourself failing questions because of your refusal to put the novel into consideration.

Erstwhile JAMB Compulsory Novels

Below are the Past Compulsory Novels that JAMB has been using and the particular year each of them was used.

  • “Sweet Sixteen” written by Bolaji Abdullahi (used in 2018, 2019, 2020)
  • “The last Days at Forcados High School written by A.I.I Mohammed (Used from starting till 2016)
  • “Independence” written by Sarah Ladipo Manyika (used in 2017)

Brief Summary of JAMB Recommended Novel

A family of six awaits the arrival of Mr Esquire. While they wait, Bint gives an account of her classroom encounter with her intrusive Social studies teacher, Mallam Salihu, who is known to act as though he knew a bit more about every subject as he will often ask questions outside the subject of discussion.

Bint narrates how she genuinely handled a similar occurrence leaving the teacher dumbfounded by the cheering and laugher of other pupils.

Ummi is seamlessly proud of her daughter, particularly, Bint’s intelligent approach to issues and she joins in the discussion right before Omar joyfully announces his admission to study law at the Ahmadu Bello University.

As the family gather to celebrate Omar’s success, Omar boasts of his achievement and takes pride in solely overcoming examination challenges and several other entry procedures while seeking admission.

More Summary

Ummi recognises her son’s naivety and tries to enlighten him about the life-changing capability of university admission. Ummi tells her children how her admission changed her.

Twenty years ago, Ummi gains admission into the university and gets married to her husband even before she starts her registration.

Ummi tells them about the freedom and the carefree life of students in the university, the difficulty in distinguishing between teachers and students with female dressing almost naked and how some faculties are required to be on dress codes. Ummi further discloses her experience with Salma, a sophisticated young lady.

Salma goes for her registration much later than everyone else but expresses discomfort and irritation about the delay in the registration process.
