What You Should Understand By JAMB Cut-off Mark

Before applying to study any course within any JAMB-affiliated institution, one must sit for a JAMB-set examination. This examination is the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

This is an annual examination held for candidates who seek admission into the various tertiary institutions in the country. So as to give the candidates clarity regarding their chances of getting admitted, JAMB releases a list of cut-off marks which each candidate is expected to meet to be in a position to be offered admission.

For those who seek to study in the schools of Nursing and other similar institutions, you might be wondering if this applies to you. It does not. Those institutions have their own entrance examinations and they are not under JAMB’s jurisdiction.

Why JAMB Sets Cut off Marks for Institutions

You might be wondering why JAMB sets cut off marks for institutions. For the record, JAMB is the body in charge of giving admissions to candidates who write its examinations, that is, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

With such responsibility, JAMB makes it easier and clearer for candidates to know where they fit-in in with respect to their UTME scores. This also makes the entire admission process easier for JAMB to manage while at the same time makes the process transparent enough for the public to understand.

Within the institutions, there are also course differences regarding the JAMB cut off marks. This means that within a particular school, a certain score could meet the cut off mark required for a particular course without doing the same for another.

Simply, the cut-off mark set by JAMB for candidates seeking to study Social Studies in a particular school cannot be the same for those applying for Medicine and Surgery in the same school.

Are there differences between JAMB cut off points for universities and for Polytechnics?

The cut-off mark system as institutionalized by JAMB is in such a way that there are brackets where candidates belong with respect to their UTME scores. This gives the candidates the option to try other levels if they fail to meet the cut-off mark requirements of their desired level.

In other words, a candidate who applies for a federal or state university if unable to meet the required score can choose to switch to Polytechnics and be qualified there.

As such, there are differences between universities and polytechnics JAMB required cut-off marks. This, as the government has been emphasizing, does not mean studying in the polytechnics is inferior to university education.
