About NABTEB

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board was founded in 1992 to domesticate craft level examinations.

More so, it was previously conducted by City & Guilds, Pittman’s, and the Royal Society of Arts throughout the United Kingdom in conformity with the principles of the National Policy on Education.

Its formation was the culmination of a 15-year evolutionary process in which FOUR Government Panels were established at various periods to assess the place and structure of public examinations in our educational system.

Mission

Develop as a Globally Recognized Assessment Body for Craftsmen and Technicians.

Vision

NABTEB is a vision-led, mission-driven public institution with the following vision: To be a Globally Recognised Assessment and Certification Body Preparing Candidates for the Workplace and Academic/Professional Excellence.

The management of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) is yet to release the 2023 November/December NBC/NTC and ANBC/ANTC examinations results.

Candidates who intend to take part in the 2023 NABTEB GCE can learn how to check their results online.

NABTEB Computer Craft Studies Practical Past Questions and Answers 2024

Question 1

(a)

(i) What is a firewall?

(ii) List two methods used in protecting the computer system.

(b) Explain the following stages of the System Development Life Cycle:

(i) feasibility study:

(ii) design:

(iii)maintenance.

Answers

The expected answers were:

(a)

(i) A firewall is a network security system that monitors and controls all the incoming and outgoing network traffic based on an advanced and defined set of protocol/security rules.

(ii) Methods used in protecting the computer system

1. Use antivirus

2. Update the operating system

3. Use a firewall

4. Encryption of files/folders

5. Use of certificates

6. Physical protection

7. Authentication/password/biometric

8. Use of license software

9. Download files from trusted sites.

(b) (i) Feasibility study stage:

This is a stage in the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) that determines if the set goals of the plan can be accomplished and information is gathered to identify what is needed to achieve the goal.

(ii) Design stage:

This is the most critical phase in the development of a system. At this stage, the logical design is carried out and converted into physical system design.

The programming language, the hardware and the software platform on which the new system will run are also decided.

The data structure, control process, equipment source, documentation, workload and limitation of the system, interface, training, procedures of using the system, taking backups and staffing requirements are decided at this stage.

(iii) Maintenance stage

This is the stage in which errors in the system are eliminated. The new system must meet any future enhancement, functionality and any other feature to cope with the latest needs

Question 2

(a) A musician intends to record music on a storage medium. List four ways that the music file can be organised in the storage medium.

(b) State two basic operations on a computer file.

(c) Explain the following computer terms:

(i) file;

(ii) record.

Answers

The expected answers were:

(a) Ways music files can be organised in the storage medium:

1. Random/Direct Accessing

2. Sequential Accessing/in sequence

3. Serial Accessing/in series

4. Indexed-Sequential Accessing

5. Indexed.

(b) Basic operations on a computer file

– file naming

– file creation

– file deletion

– file retrieval

– file copying

– file renaming

– search

– overwriting a file

– update a file

– opening a file

– closing a file.

(c)

(I) Computer File

A computer file is a collection or group of digital/electronics records stored in a computer storage device.

For example, excel file, CorelDraw file, database file, image file, video file, an audio file, graphics file, text file and PowerPoint file.

(ii) Record

A record is a collection/ group of logically related fields/attributes/data items which together can be treated as a unit that describes an entity in a computer.

For example, student’s records, staff/personnel records, health records, birth records and death records.

Question 3

(a) Explain the following terms:

storage device;

virtual memory.

(b) Two storage devices have capacities of 2 kB and 2 MB, respectively.

(i) Calculate the number of bits that each of 2 kB and 2 MB can hold.

2 kB; 2 MB: Putting the two storage devices together, calculate the total capacity in bytes.

Answers

The expected answers were:

(a)

(i) storage device

A storage device is a piece of computer equipment/device/hardware/peripheral, that can hold /store data/information. It can also transfer data.

(ii) Virtual memory

Virtual memory is the type of memory that allows a programmer to make a memory device behave as if it has unlimited storage capacity. This supposed “extra” memory is stored in secondary storage.

(b)

(i) Calculating number of bits held by each device

2KB

1 Kilobyte = 1024bytes
1 byte = 8bit
2 kilobytes = 2x1024x8
= 16384bits

2MB

1 Megabyte = 1024 kilobytes
1 kilobyte = 1024bytes
2 kilobytes = 2x1024x8
1 byte = 8bits
Therefore: 2MB = 2x1024x1024x8
= 16777216bits

(ii) Calculation of total capacity

To add 2Mb and 2Kb together

2Mb =2x1024x1024bytes = 2097152bytes
2Kb = 2x1024bytes = 2048bytes
Total in bytes = 2097152 + 2048bytes
=2,099,200bytes.

NABTEB is one of the examination bodies set up by the Federal Government in 1992 to reduce the burden of conducting examinations, which involves a lot of technical and trade-related practicals.
