NECO Further Mathematics Theory Question and Answers

Question 1

Topic: Matrices and Determinants

(a) Given matrix A = [2413][2143], find the determinant of A.

(b) If B=[1−235]B=[13−25], calculate the inverse of matrix B.

Answer 1

(a) The determinant of matrix A is calculated as follows: det(A)=(2×3)−(4×1)=6−4=2det(A)=(2×3)−(4×1)=6−4=2

(b) To find the inverse of matrix B, use the formula: B−1=1det(B)×adj(B)B−1=det(B)1×adj(B) where adj(B) is the adjugate of matrix B.

B−1=1(1×5)−(−2×3)×[52−31]=111×[52−31]B−1=(1×5)−(−2×3)1×[5−321]=111×[5−321]

Question 2

Topic: Integration

(a) Evaluate ∫(2x^2+3x−1) x∫(2x2+3x−1)dx.

(b) Determine the definite integral ∫01(4x^3−2x^2+5) x∫01(4x3−2x2+5)dx.

Answer 2

(a) Integrate term by term: ∫(2x^2+3x−1) x=2x^3+2x^2−x+x∫(2x2+3x−1)dx=32x3+23x2−x+C where C is the constant of integration.

(b) Evaluate the definite integral: ∫01(4x^3−2x^2+5) x=[4x^4−2x^3+5x]01=1−23+5=103∫01(4x3−2x2+5)dx=[44x4−32x3+5x]01=1−32+5=10/3

Question 3

Topic: Probability

(a) A bag contains 5 red balls, 3 green balls, and 2 blue balls. If a ball is chosen at random, find the probability that it is green.

(b) Two dice are thrown. Calculate the probability of getting a sum of 7.

Answer 3

(a) Probability of choosing a green ball:

P(Green)=Total Number of BallsNumber of Green Balls=3/10

(b) Possible combinations for a sum of 7: (1,6), (2,5), (3,4), (4,3), (5,2), (6,1).

Total outcomes when rolling two dice: 6 * 6 = 36.

P(Sum of 7)=Total Number of Outcomes/Number of Favorable Outcomes=6/36=1/6
