The WAEC Animal Husbandry Syllabus 2023 is out. The Animal Husbandry (ALT B) 2022/2023 West African Examination Council (WAEC) Syllabus is aimed at preparing candidates for the Board’s examination.

WAEC Animal Husbandry Syllabus

This is a comprehensive syllabus on Animal Husbandry ALT B for the 2020/2021 West African Examination (WAEC).

WAEC Animal Husbandry Syllabus

The syllabus presents animal husbandry as a means of livelihood, with a focus on developing knowledge and entrepreneurial skills in the field.

Candidates will be expected to answer questions on all the topics listed under the “Syllabus” column.

The accompanying notes indicate the questions that will be asked, but they do not provide an exhaustive list of examples and limitations.

Candidates should be familiar with a variety of topics, including external parasites (such as lice, mites, and fleas) and internal parasites (such as tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, liver flukes, and trypanosomes), as well as their life cycles, prevention, and control.

Aims and Objectives

The syllabus aims to evaluate candidates’ proficiency and abilities in the following areas:

1. Fundamental animal husbandry practices, including feeding, housing, and pest and disease management;

2. Effective and productive management of animal operations;

3. Efficient methods of processing, preserving, packaging, storing, and marketing animal products;

4. Foundational entrepreneurial skills related to animal husbandry vocations;

5. Fundamental comprehension and expertise in animal health and improvement.

Requirements

Schools that offer Animal Husbandry courses are required to raise at least one type of farm animal from each of the following categories:

1. Monogastric animals, such as poultry, pigs, snails, camels, donkeys, horses, rabbits, and bees.

2. Ruminant animals, such as cattle, sheep, and goats.

3. It is strongly recommended that schools have agricultural laboratories.

4. Students are encouraged to maintain practical notebooks and specimen albums containing detailed records of activities, observations, and specimens collected during school farm and field trips.

5. It is also expected that the curriculum will include visits to established livestock and poultry farms, abattoirs, feed mills, animal product-based companies, and other institutions related to animal husbandry.

Examination Scheme (Marking Scheme)

Candidates are required to take all three papers: Papers 1, 2, and 3. Papers 1 and 2 will be combined into a single composite paper that must be taken in one sitting.

Paper 1 will comprise 40 multiple choice questions that must be completed within 40 minutes for a total of 40 marks.

Paper 2 will contain six essay questions, covering the entire syllabus. Each question is worth 20 marks, and candidates will need to answer four questions within two hours, with a total of 80 marks available.

Paper 3 will be a practical paper for students from schools and a practical work test for private candidates. Both versions will include four questions, and candidates will have 1.5 hours to answer all questions, with a total of 60 marks available.
