WAEC Chemistry Practical Questions 2021

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is an examination board that conducts the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), for University and Jamb entry examination in West African countries.

In a year, over three million candidates registered for the exams coordinated by WAEC.

This post highlights samples of the apparatus, alternatives to practical graphs and calculations that were used in the Chemistry Practical Examination past questions and syllabus.

Frequently Set WAEC Chemistry Practical Questions

This is a complete list of the normal apparatus and reagents for qualitative work, including the following with all reagents appropriately labelled to avoid mistakes.

Four test tubes

• Wash bottle containing distilled/ deionised water

• Mathematical table /calculator.

• Dilute sodium hydroxide solution

• Barium chloride solution

• Dilute trioxonitrate (V) acid

• Glass rod

• Aqueous ammonia

Dilute hydrochloric acid

• Silver trioxonitrate (V) solution

• Dilute tetraoxosulphate (VI) acid

• Filtration apparatus

• Spatula

Two boiling tubes.

During WAEC chemistry practice exam, they should supply each candidate with the following, where ‘n’ is the candidate’s serial number.

150cm3 of ethanedioic acid (H2C204) solution in a corked flask or bottled labelled ‘An’. These should all be the same containing 4.50g of H2C204 per dm3 of solution.

150cm3 of potassium tetraoxomanganate (VII) solution in a corked flask or bottle labelled ‘Bn’. These should all be the same containing 3.16g of KMnO4 per dm3 of solution.

One spatula full of a uniform mixture of NaCl and ZnCO3 in a specimen bottle labelled ‘Cn’. The components of the mixture should be in the ratio 1:1 by mass.

A student adds a known mass of magnesium ribbon to 100 cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid (an excess) in the apparatus shown below. Hydrogen gas is evolved. The time taken to collect 48 cm3 of gas at room temperature and pressure is measured.

(a) (i) Name apparatus A.
(ii) Name apparatus B.
(b) (i) Calculate the number of moles of hydrogen in the 48 cm3 of gas.
[1 mole of any gas occupies 24 000 cm3 at room temperature and pressure.]

(ii) Use the equation below to deduce the mass of magnesium used in the experiment to produce 48 cm3 of hydrogen at room temperature and pressure. [Ar : Mg, 24]
Mg + 2HCl MgCl2 + H2
(c) Give a test for hydrogen gas.

(d) What is the effect on the time taken to collect the same volume of a gas if,
(i) large lumps of the same mass of magnesium are used instead of magnesium ribbon,
(ii) it carried the reaction out at a higher temperature?

DISCLAIMER! These are not real WAEC Chemistry Practical questions but likely repeated questions over the years to help candidate understand the nature of their examinations. Ensure to note every question provided on this page.
