The West African Examination Council WAEC has clarified that the results of its exams are with-held due to examination malpractices in centres, contrary to speculations that it does so to witch-hunt candidates who performs excellently in their exams.

This was made known by the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC in charge of Lagos and Ogun states, Mrs. C.O. Agwu who said that results of candidates who scored zero are canceled if there is any indicting report about the centre.

“It is not about the score, it is about having reports of malpractices at any of our centres”, she said

Mrs. Agwu advised students to pay adequate attention to instructions, stressing that candidates lose marks when they don’t pay adequate attention to instructions.

On the issue of leakage of examination questions, Agwu said it was due to loopholes from various malpractice agents and examiners.

Most of the reasons WAEC withheld some schools candidates results are because the candidates may have been found copying from textbooks, use of mobile handsets and prepared answers allegedly smuggled into the examination hall.

Examination malpractice was headed by either the invigilators or the examiner. In some cases, candidate may have been found copy-scrapping extensively answers in the exam hall and in some extreme cases, candidates left the examination hall with scripts and attempted to submit the same after the stipulated time.

The council’s Head of National Office, Mr. Olu Adenipekun, acknowledged that there were cases of malpractice but it was minimal.

He said: “For cases that are established as in other previous examinations, the council is already looking at them,” he said.

The following are the penalties usually meted out to candidates found guilty of examination malpractices:

  1. The entire results of such candidates involved in proven cases be cancelled.
  2. The subjects’ results of those involved in proven cases of malpractice be similarly cancelled
  3. Some candidates will also suffer other sanctions, such as barring them from sitting for the council’s examinations for a certain number of years.

When Will WAEC Release Withheld Result.

On withheld results of the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2019, NEC will meet to decide that results of those found guilty of exam malpractice should be cancelled & results of those exonerated be released fast.

As to, “when exactly will waec release withheld results?” it all depends on how fast they are able to separate those who cheated from those who are innocent. The latest news on waec held results is that they would be released before Jamb starts giving admission.

Relevant Divisions/Departments have been put on notice to ensure that the results of candidates earlier withheld because of exam malpractice be exonerated by the 65th NEC are released as quickly as possible.

Note: The West African Examination Council (WAEC) will hold the 65th Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) Meeting to determine the release of held results. The meeting usually holds around November. The bad news is that the results seized due to malpractice may not be released again.
