Reading Specialist Interview Questions –Reading specialists are teachers who have specialized training in helping struggling readers. Most have a master of education degree. Some have additional training for teaching students with dyslexia. The coursework they take can vary, however. Here’s what you need to know about school reading specialists.

Reading specialists are most common in grade schools. Their role can vary by district and even within schools. Typically they work with students who are in a regular education classroom but who are struggling. Reading specialists don’t usually work with students who have been placed in special education.

The reading specialist has specialized knowledge of assessment and diagnosis that is vital for developing, implementing, and evaluating the literacy program in general, and in designing instruction for individual students. He or she can assess the reading strengths and needs of students and provide that information to classroom teachers, parents, and specialized personnel such as psychologists, special educators, or speech teachers, in order to provide an effective reading program.

Reading Specialist Job Responsibilities

  1. Observes disabled readers in the classroom, upon teacher’s request.
  2. Assists classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborate in planning the instructional strategies.
  3. Assists in the selection of appropriate materials utilized by the classroom teacher for corrective measures.
  4. Provides demonstrations of new methods and materials (i.e. team teaching)
  5. Interprets and disseminates results of the third-grade comprehension test to third and fourth-grade teachers.
  6. Develops and implements a remediation plan for non-EEN students who have third-grade comprehension test results identified as basic or minimal.
  7. Utilizes the Reading Recovery method of intervention and instruction for primary students, particularly in grade one. 3. Is responsible for maintaining the literature collection
  8. Plans and develops special reading projects as approved or provided.
  9. Serves as a resource to the board and administration in areas of reading instruction and curriculum.
  10. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of the K-8 reading program.

 Reading Specialists Job Requirements

  1. Masters Degree from an accredited educational institution.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
  3. Experience in presenting educational training programs with a demonstrated knowledge and practice of language Arts or reading preferred.
  4. Valid Mississippi teacher certification in an appropriate area.
  5. Reading certification required.
  6. Satisfactory criminal background check and drug screening.

Knowledge of child growth and development and especially of characteristics of students/children in the age group assigned. Knowledge of prescribed curriculum.

Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. Knowledge of learning styles. Ability to use varied teaching methods. Knowledge of current trends, research and best practices related to reading instruction.

Knowledge of School Board policies and practices as they relate to teaching. Ability to handle problems, concerns and emotional distress with sensitivity and tact.
