Bus Driver Interview Questions and Answers Series 2022

Bus drivers have an enormous responsibility for ensuring that passengers arrive at their destinations safely.

Besides talking about your professional history and what skills you offer to the company, you should be ready to answer questions that are specifically asked during interviews for bus drivers.

Being responsible for the well-being of others means you need to respond quickly in certain situations. When you are driving, you may need to make a snap judgment and do what you believe is best for everyone.

This can include avoiding traffic accidents or knowing what to do when someone on your bus has a health problem.

I should answer this question with an authentic example from a previous place of work so that you adequately show you can make excellent decisions quickly.

This is also a great opportunity to talk about your safety record and any accomplishments you are proud of. You can also customize your response based on whether you are applying to drive a school or city bus.

1. How Much Education and Experience Do You Have?

In order to drive a bus for either the city or a school system, you must be properly licensed. You should be sure to bring this license with you to present it to your interviewer.

Next, be truthful about the amount of experience you have.

If you have only driven a bus a few times, you should never try to bluff. Be honest about the amount of experience you have but be sure to mention your safety record, particularly if it is impeccable.

2. How Would You Rate Your Ability to Drive a Bus at Night?

Staying awake at night is not something natural for a human being, so night shifts are obviously more difficult than day shifts.

However, if one gets sufficient rest and sleep during the day, night shifts are not too difficult to manage. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate my ability to drive a bus at night at 8.

3. What is your primary concern when a Breakdown Happens?

My primary concern is the passengers’ safety. On the rare occasion that my bus has broken down, my first instinct has been to ensure that the passengers remain safe.

4. How Long Have You Been Driving a Bus?

Try to focus on your positive experience with driving. Mention that you have never had an accident and that they always satisfied the passengers with the way you drove them to their destination.

If it is your first experience, your first job application, stay honest. Say that the driving school inspector was happy with your performance and that you believe you can drive safely.

5. Why do You Want This Job?

This question may seem obvious, but your interviewer can learn a lot from your answer. If you are only interested in the job for a paycheck, you may not be as cautious as you should be.

The best answer to this question involves simply telling your interviewer that driving a bus is what you want to do with your life.

You should take the time to mention that you are a cautious driver and that you take the well-being of your passengers very seriously.

6. How do you Work in Inclement Weather Conditions?

Driving a bus in inclement weather is all in a day’s work for bus drivers. I do not mind it one bit. In fact, it adds variety to my work.

7. Do you mind Working Nights and Weekends?

You will be asked this question only if you are applying for a position driving a city bus. In larger cities, buses run well into the night—sometimes even 24 hours a day.

They may give you a midnight shift because of your lack of seniority, or the schedule may require that you work swing shifts.

This is not the time to discuss your personal scheduling needs, however. Replying with a statement such as “I do not mind working nights or weekends and I am always available” will suffice.
