The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was set up in 1998, is the electoral body which oversees elections in Nigeria.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar established the current INEC, with Justice Ephraim Akpata as chairman.

However, after Akpata died in January 2000, the government of President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Abel Guobadia Nigeria’s Chief Electoral Officer, a position that was confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in May 2000.

In June 2005, Guobadia retired and was succeeded by Professor Maurice Iwu.

However, on 8 June 2010, Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega was nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan as the new INEC Chairman.

3. NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate.

4. West African School Certificate (WAEC) with Credits in not less than three (3) subjects including English and at least passes in two (2) other subjects.

5. Candidates must have National Examination Council (NECO) with passes in four (4) subjects obtained at one sitting or five (5) subjects obtained at two sittings including the English Language.)

6. National Diploma (ND) obtained from a recognized institution.

7. National Certificate of Education (NCE) from a recognized institution.

8. All candidates must have a valid means of identification such as a valid driver’s license, National Identification Card, International passport, Voters card etc.

9. Ability to work with basic computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.).

10. Geographical mobility within and outside Nigeria.

Mistakes to Avoid While Applying

A lot of people fail in many applications not because they are not qualified, but because of numerous mistakes. So take note of the following:

1. Apply on time, do not wait for the deadline.

2. Do the application processes alone, don’t send anybody to avoid mistakes in your data
