Federal Inland Revenue Tax is a compulsory charge imposed on the earning of individuals, corporate organizations and government agencies for the sponsoring of government expenditures.

The FIRS as part of its strategic wishes to employ young graduates with integrity, drive and desire to accomplish professionally and strengthen the workforce.

In their quest to deliver quality service to taxpayers and operate an efficient and transparent tax system that optimizes tax revenue collection for National Development as stipulated in our vision/mission statement.

History of FIRS

The Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service was created in 1943, when it was carved out of the erstwhile Inland Revenue Department that covered what was then the Anglo-phone West Africa (including Ghana, Gambia and Sierra Leone) during the colonial era.

In 1958 the Board of Inland Revenue was established under the Income Tax Ordinance of 1958.

After various transformations in 1961 and 1993, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the operational arm of FBIR, secured its autonomy through the emergence of the FIRS (Establishment) Act 13 of 2007.

The commencement date of this Act was 16th April 2007. The Act is a compendium of establishment, powers, management, financial provisions, tax administration and other provisions guiding the administration of FIRS.

Currently, FIRS is one of the Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) charged primarily with the responsibility of accessing, collecting and accounting for the various taxes to the federal government.

In a Revenue Collection agency like the FIRS, quality service delivery is critical to success.

Functions of FIRS

The functions of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) are, but are not limited to the following;

  1. Appropriate Supervision of a number of Officers responsible for the assessment of small companies, individual business concerns, trust and estates.
  2. Conducting major inquiries into the affairs of small companies.
  3. Ensuring that there is a uniform application of Tax regulations, Tax laws and Information circulars.
  4. Following up cases that are in dispute, through the proper appeal procedures.
  5. Raising extra assessments while monitoring tax returns.

  2. Ensuring and enforcing the uniform application of Tax Laws, Tax Regulations and Information circulars to all affected and relevant taxpayers.
  3. Monitoring some Officers in charge of assessing small companies; individual business concerns; partnerships; estates and trust.
  4. Carrying out an investigation into the finances of small companies.
  5. Following up on cases of finance discrepancies in companies through the appeal procedures.
  6. The candidate should possess excellent organization and interpersonal skills.
  7. Excellent business acumen and proficient revenue sourcing skills in tax accounting.
  8. Target drove and can function effectively with less supervision. A member of a relevant professional institution is an advantage.

The requirements for the 2021 Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) recruitment include the following;

  1. Interested candidates should have commercial business knowledge, and the ability to interpret business numbers and strategies of profit derivation in tax accounting.
  2. Applicants should be highly organized, with strong interpersonal skills to support and represent the team where necessary, both externally and internally.
  3. Interested applicants must have a clear criminal record.
  4. Candidates interested in the Federal Inland Revenue Service should possess strong leadership and management skills.
  5. Applicants must be inherent citizens of Nigeria.
  6. The knowledge of businesses or industrial environments within which taxpayers operate is also important.
  7. Candidates must be completely healthy, and must not be physically challenged.
  8. The ability to work as a regulator with the courage to ensure full compliance with laws.
  9. Candidates with strong interpersonal and communication skills have an edge.
  10. Candidates must be certified by the Government Medical Officer, to prove that they are physically fit, mentally and psychologically balanced to participate in the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) 2021 recruitment exercise.
  11. Strong team spirit and excellent analytical skills.
  12. Applicants must be creative, innovative and willing to adapt to new ideas and environments.
  13. Quality knowledge of the Nigerian Tax Laws, in addition to the appreciation of their application and understanding of the regulatory framework within which the FIRS operates;
  14. The candidate that is an expert in basic computer applications has an edge.
  15. Basic computer applications include; Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, Web applications and the use of other relevant applications.
  16. A successful track record of consistent personal achievement and a desire to learn and improve.
  17. Possession of B.Sc, HND, NCE, OND concerning the applied position from a recognized institution.
  18. Any added certificate either postgraduate or professional certification will be of advantage.
  19. NYSC Discharge/Exemption Certificate.
  20. West African School Certificate (WAEC) with Credits in not less than three (3) subjects including English and at least passes in two (2) other subjects.
  21. Candidates must have National Examination Council (NECO) with passes in four (4) subjects obtained at one sitting or five (5) subjects obtained at two sittings including the English Language.)
  22. National Diploma (ND) obtained from a recognized institution.
  23. National Certificate of Education (NCE) from a recognized institution.
  24. All candidates must have a valid means of identification such as a valid driver license, National Identification Card, International passport, Voters card etc.
