Manitoba Student Loans

Manitoba is the first province in Western Canada to eliminate provincial interest in all Manitoba student loans and enhance loan accessibility for students.

Applying early is always better. We’ll explain how early you should apply and why. Usually, applications for fall and winter studies are available in June. Students should apply early to make sure they don’t miss any deadlines.

Online applications take two weeks to process, and paper applications are available in July and take five weeks to process unless the school or program requires a designation.

You can apply even if your school has not officially accepted you, just make sure you know the name of your school, the program you are going into, and the start and end dates.

You can apply early using the online application.

Who is Eligible for Manitoba Student Loan?

You have to check your eligibility before applying for a student loan. Fortunately, this list of requirements from the Manitoba government makes things simple.

You must be:

1. A permanent resident of Canada or a citizen of Canada.

2. A citizen or permanent resident of a territory or province that offers Canadian Student Loans.

3. Ability to demonstrate financial need.

4. Are you enrolled full-time throughout each academic term, which means that you are taking at least 60% of the available courses?

5. Enroll in a program for a degree, diploma, or certificate offered by a recognized post-secondary educational institution that lasts for at least 12 weeks out of a maximum of 15 weeks.

6. If you are over 22 and applying for a Canadian student loan for the first time, you must be able to pass a credit check.

7. If you’ve already applied for and been granted a Canada Student Loan, keep up your good grades.

8. Verify that you haven’t used up all of your lifetime financial aid, including interest-free status.

Manitoba Student Aid Application Tips

Applying for student loans can sometimes be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be so. To assist you with the application process, take your time and read these tips:

1. Apply as Soon as Possible

It can be dangerous to apply too late or too close to the deadline.

2. Apply Online

The easiest method is to apply it online. Although they take longer, paper applications are not advised.

3. Sign up for Two Terms

To be eligible for a loan, you must be enrolled full-time. Make sure your course load corresponds with the loan you are applying for.

4. Go Through Everything

Documents, some requiring a signature, will be mailed to you. You won’t be eligible and the application process will end if these documents are not submitted.

5. Keep Copies of your Documents

Having the original documentation on hand will help resolve any issues that may come up.

6. Ask for Assistance

While conducting your research is beneficial, talking to an informed party, like your provincial loan office, can ultimately save you money by preventing late penalties and a great deal of waiting time.

Repaying your Government Student Loans

After the final day of their full-time enrollment, residents of Manitoba are required to begin repaying their student loans. Throughout the time of your full-time studies, you won’t be charged. That being said, interest will be applied to any outstanding debts once the six-month grace period has passed.

But fear not! To guarantee you can pay back your student loan in the most effective manner, numerous procedures are in place. Instructions to start repaying your loan will be mailed by the government at least one month in advance.

The Manitoba Repayment Assistance Plan offers longer repayment times and lower monthly charges if you’re concerned about your ability to repay your student loans.

What is the Manitoba Student Loan Interest Rate?

One fantastic benefit of living in Manitoba is that the interest rate on your student loans is 0% both while you are enrolled in classes and even after you graduate. On the other hand, you also get a 0% interest rate for the first six months you are out of school if you get a loan from Canada Student Loans.

If you choose to repay it on a floating interest rate, the rate increases to a prime rate of 3.95% after the six-month term; if you choose to repay it on a fixed interest rate, the rate increases to a prime rate of 3.95% + 2%.

If you are concerned about your ability to pay back your loan, the Manitoba Repayment Assistance Plan might be able to help.

How does the Manitoba Repayment Assistance Plan work?

If you’re eligible for assistance, your monthly loan payments are calculated based on your family income and size. It’s also possible that you may not have to make any loan payments until your income goes up.

The Repayment Assistance Plan allows you to repay your student loan within a maximum of 15 years (or 10 years if you have a permanent disability).

If you have a permanent disability, please see our Repayment Assistance for Borrowers with a Permanent Disability section.

There are two stages to the Repayment Assistance Plan

Stage 1: You’ve been on the plan for less than five years.

1. You can be in Stage 1 for a total of 5 years during a 10 year period (starting from the last time you were a full-time student).

2. Your monthly payments will not go over 20% of your monthly income.

3. You’re still eligible to apply for Manitoba Student Aid once you return to school.

Stage 2: You’ve been on the Repayment Assistance Plan for more than five years, you’ve been in repayment for 10 years or you are applying as a borrower with a permanent disability.

1. The Manitoba government will pay a portion of your loan amount.

2. Your monthly payments will not go over 20% of your monthly income.

3. You’re ineligible to apply for Manitoba Student Aid unless you have a permanent disability.
