1. COVID-19: Nigeria Grows Cases By Over 15,000

In the month of June alone 2020, Nigeria’s coronavirus cases grew by over 15,500 cases. The country also introduced an eased lockdown that entered phase II as of today, July 1.

Nigeria as of today is Africa’s third most impacted behind only South Africa and Egypt. The federal and state governments are working to increase testing as authorities stress that cases definitely far exceed the current tally of 25,694.

2. The Nigerian Education Sector Covid-19 Response Strategy 

A resilient and responsive education system, effectively providing inclusive quality education, is a necessity for driving and sustaining economic growth and national development.

The Nigeria Education Sector COVID – 19 Response Strategy is developed by the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with its Development Partners and the States.

The purpose of the initiative is to provide the modality for a coordinated, systemic, and appropriate response to COVID – 19 that will involve all stakeholders.

The objective is aimed at mitigating the immediate effect and impact of the pandemic on the education sector, and to enhance the sector’s responsiveness and resilience in providing inclusive quality education at all levels.

It provides the enabling framework for well-coordinated and effective planning, implementation, performance monitoring, and feedback.

3. Ondo Governor Gets Infected With Covid-19

Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, today confirmed that he had contracted COVID-19. According to a post on Twitter, he said he was asymptomatic and self-isolating.

He now joins Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, who also confirmed being infected early this month. Governors Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna, Senator Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Seyin Makinde of Oyo, have all recovered from the virus.

4. Kaduna Lawmakers Ordered To Test

All lawmakers in the north-central Kaduna state house of assembly have been ordered to undergo the COVID-19 test. The order also covers all other staff after a positive case was recorded among the assembly staff last week.

Speaker Yusuf Zailani gave the directive which was confirmed by Ali Kalat, deputy chairman, house committee on health, on Tuesday.

Kalat, further confirmed that some lawmakers have already tested and are free from the virus. He did not give details as to how many of them.

5. Federal Government Lists Conditions For Reopening Of Schools

Ahead of the reopening of educational institutions, the Federal Government (FG) has outlined conditions to be met by each of the schools. They have advised the schools to put in place preventive measures against COVID-19 before announcing reopening dates.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, who represented the Minister for Education, Adamu Adamu, at the 2020 policy meeting on Admissions to Tertiary Institutions, on Tuesday in Abuja, which was organized by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

6. COVID-19 Update in Nigeria

On the 6th of July 2020, 575 new confirmed cases and 9 deaths were recorded in Nigeria bringing the total confirmed cases recorded in the country to 29,286.

The spread of novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) in Nigeria continues to record significant increase as the latest statistics provided by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control reveal Nigeria now has 29,286 confirmed cases.

7. FCMB Shuts Contact Center Locations Due To COVID-19 Scare

First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited informed its customers, yesterday, that its contact center locations have all been temporarily shut down following COVID-19 scare.

A brief statement that was issued via Twitter emphasized that the general shutdown of the physical locations is only a temporary and precautionary measure aimed at preventing further spread of the contagious virus.

The statement, however, did not clarify whether there have been any reported cases of infection at these contact center locations.

8. Nigerian Governors Who Have Tested Positive For Coronavirus 

Six Nigerian governors have contracted the novel coronavirus, but some have recovered. On Saturday, July 4, Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

This makes him the 6th Governor to have tested positive for the virus that has infected over 11 million and killed no less than 532,000 people globally. 

9. Nigeria Launches COVID-19 Online Course on Infection Prevention and Control

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has launched a course on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), in the context of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This online course is available to the general public but targeted at health care workers, to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases while administering health care in Nigeria.

10. Nigeria Warns VIPs Not To Bring Aides To Airports

he Federal government yesterday warned top government officials and Very Important Persons, VIPs, not to approach airport terminals with their aides or personal assistants, saying such privileges will no longer be entertained once the operation of domestic flights commences tomorrow.

Giving the warning during the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, said only the person traveling will be allowed within the terminal, in compliance with COVID-19 regulations.
