The National youth service corps, NYSC was introduce to promote patriotism for the country and the spirit of nationhood among young graduates. After graduating, it is a prerequisite that one must go on a one year service to Nigeria, however, there are certain things to consider before going for NYSC. 1. Arrange all Documents and make Photocopies where necessary

If you can forget any other thing, remember your documents. Your documents will be one of those essential things required before being admitted into the camp. Your document is very important as far as NYSC is concern.

Documents such as:

  • Call-up letter
  • Statement of Result/transcript
  • First degree certificates
  • School ID card
  • Passport photographs

Will be required of you. Remember that you won’t be allowed into camp premises without any of them. Go there with about 10 passports & 5 document photocopies each

2. Make sure you are cleared

Make sure you are cleared by your school as any student who is not cleared will not be mobilise for service. Endeavor to clear with your school during your final year. Your clearance makes you eligible to proceed to NYSC. Make sure you have paid all your debt in order to obtain your certificate. Make sure that your fee clearance card is signed and it is up to date.

3. Endeavor to be mobilise by your school

Mobilisation for NYSC is done every year by the student’s affairs department of any Institution. When once it is time for mobilization and graduate are called upon, endeavor to join others in the mobilization exercise.  The student’s affairs department of your school will give you a form to fill after which your data will be submitted to Abuja. Mobilisation for NYSC is very important and if missed, one stand a chance of missing it NYSC for that particular year.

4. Join NYSC school orientation talk show

Joining the NYSC talk show is of high important. This talk show has gone a long way in helping prospective corpers. NYSC talk shows are usually a little group of talk about NYSC with the main aim of informing prospective corpers on the do’s and don’t’s of service. This talk show is usually organize by core members who visit higher institutions for the purposed of telling students what they should expect as well as what they should expect in their service year.

Many people do the mistake of going there with the mission of utilising Government’s monthly allowance, but the truth is that this allowance is usually not enough for corpers and sometimes it is not being paid on time. So the need for enough money is of high important.

In the camp ground where corpers are not paid, you will be expected to make purchase of items such as: your meal and other essential commodities.

8. Prepare your C.V

Less I forget, another important documents which you need to take to service is your C.V, so it is of high important that you prepare your C.V before going to the camp. Many corpers are employed during their service year. Chances are that you may be posted to a place where your services is of high important to your host community and you may be ask to submit your curriculum Vitae.

Research has it that many non-indigenes of a particular community migrated to another community as a result of NYSC service. Some people in the quest for a greener pasture will toil the nooks and crannies of their host state in order to be employ. While others in a bid to change their settlement will want to settle in a particular community after their service year, therefore the need to be employ arises.

9. Exchange contacts

It is often said: whosoever you meet in your way up, you will surely meet in your way down. It is important to exchange contacts with your friends at home as well as your colleagues who are not privilege to serve just like you. These people will be of high important in informing you on what is going on in your community. If you belong to groups and organizations, inform them of your departure to service and exchange contacts with the members of the group.

Before going for service, you ought to pray earnestly for your service year. Many people have lost their lives during their service year others have passed away when journeying to their community of service.  Some corpers think it is their might others think it is their strength that has kept them alive. Whatever you are, whether Christian, Muslim or traditionalist you should have a GOD whom you pray to.
