The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says its 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates, earlier scheduled for May/June, may not hold.

The Council’s Head of National Office (HNO), Patrick Areghan, gave the hint while announcing the release of results of the 2021 first series of the WASSCE for private candidates on Tuesday in Lagos.

Mr Areghan said the effect of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is still much felt in the education sector.

1. WAEC Releases Woeful 2021 Result

Generally, results for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for 2021 released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is nothing to write home about.

According to Patrick Areghan, the national head of WAEC in Nigeria, out of the 7,289 candidates who wrote the examination, only 2,938 of them (just 40.31%) got credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects with or without English Language and Mathematics.

2. WAEC Announces Date for the Release of WASSCE Result

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that private candidates who sat for the 2021-First Series West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would see their results on Tuesday, April 6.

The examination body made the announcement via its official Twitter handle, on Monday night, April 5.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has cancelled a series of examinations for private candidates.

The cancellation affected the first series Literature-in-English (2&1,3) examination of the 2021 WASSCE taken by private candidates.

The examination which was held on Friday, February 26 has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 11, 2021.

4. WAEC Announces 2020 WASSCE Result

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that 39.82% made credits in five subjects including Mathematics and English in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates 2020 (second series).

The nation reports that the commission’s head of national office, Patrick Areghan also announced the opening of registration for the 2021 WASSCE for school candidates three months behind schedule.

While Areghan was announcing the release of the WASSCE for private candidates 2020 result on Monday, February 15, he said the result was an improvement in performance in the examination in the last two years.

8. Ayade pleads with WAEC Not to Relocate, as The Exam Body Insists

The Cross River State government, yesterday, pleaded with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) not to relocate to its zonal office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State as a result of the destruction of its Calabar office by hoodlums.

The Acting Head, Public Affairs, Demianus Ojijeogu, WAEC insisted that it would temporarily relocate to its zonal office in Uyo, adding that the decision stemmed from vandalism, looting, and burning of its office in Calabar on Saturday, October 24, 2020.

Ojijeogu explained that the relocation plan, which was an interim measure, would enable the examination body to continue its operations and services to the Nigerian students and other stakeholders.

9. WAEC Agrees to Shift SSCE Due to Coronavirus

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has agreed with Nigeria to postpone the 2020 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) as a result of the disruptions caused by the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which forced the closure of schools in the country.

Senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education had mounted pressure on the examination body to shift the test and had engaged top officials of the agency in a meeting in Abuja earlier in the week on the matter.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC Orndiir Terzungwe said this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Kaduna.
