Lassa Fever: Ebonyi Gets Virology Lab. The Ebonyi State Government and the Federal Government have inaugurated an ultra –modern Lassa fever virology laboratory and centre.
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who spoke at the inauguration of the centre at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki on Monday, said that the Federal Government would partner the state by providing the manpower to run the laboratory.
Adewole said, “The Federal Government would establish six virology centres across the country, to curb the menace of the disease. The 2015 outbreak of the disease was the most disastrous in the country. This centre will be designated to the South-East to step up early diagnosis and management of the disease.”
Ebonyi was one of the most affected states during the last Lassa fever outbreak in the country.
The minister said that the Federal Government had also completed arrangements to implement the Universal Health Coverage programme for Nigerians towards the achievement of the sustainable development goals.
Earlier in his address, the state Governor, David Umahi, had said that the state government had set aside N1bn for the take off of its Comprehensive Health Programme, stating that the Federal Government had
