About NECO

The establishment of the National Examinations Council (NECO) in April 1999 is a culmination of the reaction of the Federal Government.

This was to widespread escalating agitations for a national examination outfit that would respond to the Nigerian needs and demands.

As well as cope with the annually increasing number of secondary school candidates to take Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) nationwide.

A Series of panels had earlier been set up to address the issues before this vital decision was taken.

The National Examinations Council (also known as NECO) is an examination body in Nigeria that conducts the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination and the General Certificate in Education in June/July and December/January, respectively.

PAPER 2

SECTION A

CONTINUOUS WRITING
(50 MARKS)

You are to answer only one question from this section. All questions carry equal marks. Your answer should not be less than 450 words. You are advised to spend about 45 minutes on this section.

1. Your friend in another school has requested information about your school to enable him to decide on moving over to your school. Write a letter to him discussing at least three areas in which your school excels.

2. Write an article for publication in your school magazine, discussing the reasons why children in your area drop out of school and suggesting ways of minimizing it.

3. As the president of your youth club, write a letter to the chairman of your Local Government Association complaining about the increasing rate of child labour and suggesting ways of curbing it.

4. You are the chief speaker in a debate on the topic: Women should not be in paid employment while still bearing children. Write your contribution for or against the topic.

5. Write a story that ends with the words: That experience will linger on my mind for a long time.

TIPS:

I. Try as many past questions papers as possible and compare your answers with theirs.

ii. In the reading of passages, don’t be too fast or too slow. Practice with a clock. Don’t skip lines or paragraphs as some students do.

iii. Acquire enough vocabulary – synonyms, antonyms, registers, idioms, figures of speech.

iv. Know the definitions, names and functions of parts of speech and the roles various phrases and clauses play in the structure of sentences.
