Amherst College Scholarships: Since its founding in 1821, Amherst College has become one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, enrolling some 1,600 talented, energetic and diverse young men and women.

This section of the Website provides a general introduction to the college.

Amherst College is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, a town of 35,000 people in the western part of the state. The college’s 1,000-acre campus is adjacent to downtown Amherst.

Amherst offers 34 different areas of study and an unusual open curriculum. (Students are not required to study a core curriculum or take distribution requirements.)

First-year students enroll in one of over 20 First-Year Seminars designed to engage new students in the interdisciplinary environment of a liberal arts college. Amherst offers the bachelor of arts degree in 34 fields of study in the arts, sciences, social sciences and humanities.

Fields of study: American Studies, Anthropology and Sociology, Art and the History of Art, Asian Languages and Civilizations, Astronomy, Biology, Black Studies, Chemistry, Classics, Computer Science, Creative Writing Center, Economics, English, Environmental Studies, European Studies, Film and Video Arts, First Year Seminars, French, Geology, German, History, Law, Jurisprudence, and Social Thought, Mathematics, Music, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Russian, Spanish, Special Seminars, Theater and Dance, Women’s and Gender Studies.

Aid for International Students

Amherst College is not “need blind” in evaluating international students. In considering you for admission, Amherst does take into account whether or not you have applied for financial aid. If claims of permanent residence or US citizenship are determined to be false, financial aid at Amherst is subject to revocation.

The College has a comprehensive program of financial aid that provides assistance in the form of scholarships and grants, loans, and student employment. However, a very limited number of financial aid awards are available each year to international students.

Once your financial need is determined, a financial aid award that is equal to your need will be offered. Notices of financial aid awards will be sent soon after admission letters are mailed to first-year and transfer applicants. The award is sometimes called an “aid package” because it may include both self-help (employment) and gift aid (scholarships and grants).

Students with lower financial need will be offered self-help. Students with greater need will be offered a combination of self-help and gift aid. Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, Amherst College will replace all initially packaged student loans with grant assistance and offer $1,700 in employment.
